Michael Carrick could be in line for an instant return to management with Bristol City following his exit from Middlesbrough this afternoon, according to EFL Analysis.
Boro decided to end the 43-year-old’s near three year stay at the Riverside Stadium following an end of season review. The Teessiders suffered an inconsistent campaign, with injuries and transfers of key stars leading to a disappointing 10th placed finish.
It was the second successive season in which the club had missed out on a place in the play-offs, with the club releasing a short statement confirming the news:
“Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick.
“Michael’s assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also departed the club.
“We’d like to thank Michael, Jonathan, and Graeme for all their hard work and unwavering commitment. We wish them all the very best for the future.
“The club will be making no further comment at this stage.”
Carrick Departure Causes Bristol City Rethink
News emerged earlier today via Stroud Times that former Luton Town boss Rob Edwards was closing in on a return to management with Bristol City. The Robins are on the search for a new head coach following the departure of Liam Manning to Norwich City yesterday.
Today’s news may have caused somewhat of a rethink at Ashton Gate though. According to EFL Analysis, the Robins are hoping to tempt the ex-Manchester United and England midfielder into an instant return to the dugout.
Transfer expert Graeme Bailey said:
“EFL Analysis understands that Bristol City already have an interest in Michael Carrick filling their vacancy at Ashton Gate,
“Carrick has just left Boro, along with number two Jonathan Woodgate, but they could be offered a quick-fire return at one of their rivals.”
City are hoping to build on an excellent 2024/25 campaign, which saw them finish sixth in the Championship. However, they lost out in the play-offs to Sheffield United in the semi final.
Writer’s View
Carrick was always likely to be linked with roles as soon as his departure from Middlesbrough was confirmed. Although he failed in his aim of reaching the Premier League, there is a degree of sympathy surrounding the circumstances of his tenure on Teesside. He has had to contest with a number of injuries, as well as a tough time in the transfer market with both incomings and outgoings. His reputation is unlikely to have taken a knock as a result and he is sure to have a number of clubs enquiring about his services.
