Norwich City Star Targeted By Europa League Outfit

Josh Sargent’s time was expected to be over at Norwich City after falling short of promotion, and now one Italian side has identified the striker as a target.

The Canaries slipped too far from the playoff conversation in the final stretch of the campaign, and the hierarchy at Carrow Road decided to sack manager Johannes Hoff Thorup before the season’s end. Liam Manning looks set to be his successor, however, the deal to bring the Bristol City coach has not yet been formalised.

Sargent Shortlisted

In a report from Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Italia, Sargent is one of two players being considered by AS Roma to lead their frontline from next season. I Giallorossi are currently searching for a new manager following the departure of Claudio Ranieri, but it is believed that Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini is set to take charge at the Stadio Olimpico.

Sargent, who finished fourth in the Championship’s golden boot race with 15 goals, is shortlisted beside former Werder Bremen teammate Nick Woltemade of Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. The 23-year-old joined his current side on a free transfer last summer and found the net 17 times in 33 games.

The American is also being evaluated by clubs in the Premier League and his native MLS. A recent report also stated that German clubs have contacted the 25-year-old’s camp in recent days. Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper has stated that interest has been shown in Sargent and Borja Sainz, who has been a subject of interest for Olympiacos; however, City are relaxed about the former’s situation.

Writers’ View

Josh Sargent has been a standout performer in the Championship for Norwich City, but with The Canaries failing to capture a place in the Premier League, now is the time for other clubs to try and lure him away. Roma would be a great destination for him, with the Italian giants playing Europa League football next season and are appointing Gian Piero Gasperini, someone who has won Europe’s second tier competition with Atalanta. Should the right fee come in, it feels inevitable that Sargent will leave Carrow Road.
