Bristol City Line Up Ambitious Move For MLS Defender

Bristol City are preparing an offer for CF Montréal defender George Campbell as they aim to bolster their back line ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season.

The 23-year-old centre-back is viewed as a prime target by the Robins’ hierarchy, with a bid in the region of £1 million expected to be lodged soon. Campbell has impressed in Major League Soccer since emerging at Atlanta United before moving to Montréal.

Despite fitness issues this term, he has already racked up 100 MLS appearances and earned recognition at international level, recently making his senior debut for the United States after appearances for their U20 and U23 teams.

The move comes as Bristol City look to build on a promising 2024/25 campaign in which they reached the Championship play-offs before falling short against Sheffield United. While head coach Liam Manning is reportedly on the verge of accepting the Norwich City job, the club’s recruitment plans continue apace, with Campbell high on the agenda.

Current Contract

The defender’s current contract with Montréal expires at the end of December, making him an affordable option with resale value. His blend of youth, physicality, and top-level North American experience appeals to City’s recruitment strategy as they look to evolve the squad.

Campbell has yet to play outside the US, but a switch to the English second tier offers an enticing opportunity for development. His injuries this season—a groin strain and a hamstring issue—have limited his minutes, yet he remains a player with significant upside. Sources suggest he would welcome a move to England and is ready to embrace the next step in his career.

The potential arrival also adds weight to speculation that Rob Atkinson could make a permanent move to Portsmouth, creating space in the defensive ranks at City. With uncertainty surrounding the managerial position, Campbell’s signing could represent a key piece of continuity in the club’s off-season plans.

Writer’s View

George Campbell is exactly the type of signing that aligns with Bristol City’s long-term model: young, athletic, international experience, and high ceiling. The £1m price tag makes this a relatively low-risk move for a player entering his prime.

Should the deal go through early, the Robins would gain valuable time to integrate him into the squad ahead of the new season—especially important if a managerial change is confirmed. While it remains to be seen who replaces Liam Manning, this move signals that Bristol City’s ambition to push for promotion has not dimmed one bit.
