Former Bristol City Boss Involved In Legal Claim After Training Ground Incident

Former Bristol City boss Lee Johnson is at the centre of a legal row involving one of his former players during a controversial stint in Scotland.

A compensation claim has been filed against Hibernian after a training ground incident involving Jake Doyle-Hayes and Johnson reportedly caused career-altering injuries.

Johnson’s Career Takes a Turn Amid Legal Spotlight

Johnson’s time in Scotland has resurfaced due to a lawsuit filed by midfielder Jake Doyle-Hayes. The Republic of Ireland youth international alleges that a tackle from Johnson during a session at Hibernian left him with serious injuries, ultimately affecting the trajectory of his career. The legal action, filed as a ‘compensation claim’, is directed at the Edinburgh-based club rather than the coach himself.

Doyle-Hayes, now playing in the League of Ireland for Sligo Rovers, is being represented by Thompsons Solicitors. Their partner Joel Shaw didn’t hold back in attributing blame, saying:

“The impact of this has greatly restricted his career. These injuries should never have happened and were incurred due to incompetent and incoherent decisions made by his manager. Jake’s career has been derailed by mismanagement and ineptitude. A career has been lost to this athlete.”

Once a highly rated prospect at Aston Villa, Doyle-Hayes had loan spells at Cheltenham Town and Cambridge United before joining St Mirren and then Hibernian. His time at Easter Road came to a premature end in 2023, with the injuries marking a turning point in what was once a promising career.

Johnson’s latest role at Lommel SK is another step in an intriguing managerial path. Appointed earlier this year, he’s looking to rebuild both his career and the fortunes of the City Football Group-owned club, who finished 4th in Belgium’s Challenger Pro League.

The 43-year-old also held roles behind the scenes at Manchester City, FC Copenhagen, and with Nigeria’s national team before landing in Belgium. That varied experience has built him a unique résumé, but the fallout from his time in Scotland threatens to overshadow recent progress.

Writer’s View

Lee Johnson remains one of the most recognisable names among young British coaches, but this lawsuit could become a major distraction at a pivotal time in his career. While his current work with Lommel represents a new chapter, the accusations from Doyle-Hayes—and the severity of the claim—may provoke wider conversations about the role of managers during training sessions.

Johnson’s time at Hibernian was already under scrutiny due to results, and this legal case only deepens the intrigue surrounding his tenure. For now, he will hope the Belgian project allows him to move forward—on the pitch, if not entirely off it.
