Bolton Wanderers boss Steven Schumacher has outlined his ‘straightforward’ transfer strategy as the club targets reinforcements ahead of the 2025/26 League One season.
Among the names linked is Wrexham forward Sam Dalby, who impressed on loan at Dundee United, while a new goalkeeper and wide options are also high on the wishlist.
Wanderers Begin Targeted Summer Rebuild
Dalby, who scored 15 goals in the Scottish Premiership during a loan spell with Dundee United, is still under contract at Wrexham. However, the 24-year-old is believed to be on Bolton’s radar as they look to bolster their attacking options.
Schumacher will have 18 senior professionals under contract heading into pre-season, but some, including striker Victor Adeboyejo, are recovering from long-term injuries. That has added to the urgency behind the recruitment drive.
The former Plymouth Argyle boss offered insight into his approach, explaining that data-led decisions and positional analysis remain central to the process.
“I recruit to a system. I have a squad and write down the players I have already got in the building and cross-reference that data with the players I want to bring in… If we don’t manage to do that, you go for your number two, that’s how it works. It is straightforward and seems common sense, and it is how I have always done it.”
With sporting director Fergal Harkin also eager to push for a more sustainable squad model, there is a renewed emphasis on blending youth with experience. The emergence of Sam Inwood, Sonny Sharples-Ahmed, and David Abimbola at the end of last season has encouraged the club to continue investing in its academy pipeline.
At the same time, Schumacher is wary of relying solely on youth, noting that the average age of the first team needs balance.
“Yes, we need to bring [the age] down, but we also need to get some experience as well. The majority of our players are in that middle band… We need to bring in youth, excitement, energy, but also experience and know-how about how to get out of this division.”

Writer’s View
Bolton Wanderers’ strategy this summer reflects a growing trend in League One—balancing data-driven recruitment with pragmatic experience. Steven Schumacher’s comments are refreshingly open, and his methodical approach could offer consistency in a notoriously volatile transfer market.
The potential pursuit of Sam Dalby underlines a smart blend of ambition and realism. He’s proven in a top-flight environment in Scotland and offers more upside than a typical third-tier forward. With experience already in the building and youngsters stepping up, Bolton look well-placed to build a squad that can both compete now and evolve for the future.
