Norwich City winger Borja Sainz has emerged as a summer transfer target for Champions League duo Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal.
The Spanish forward is expected to leave Carrow Road this summer following a standout campaign in the Championship.
Sainz Attracts European Interest After Stunning Season
Sainz, who contributed 22 goals and assists across 41 league appearances, was named in the Championship Team of the Season, a recognition that has reportedly prompted interest from both Athletic and Villarreal. The two clubs have secured Champions League football for 2025/26—Bilbao by virtue of a top-four finish, and Villarreal via UEFA’s performance-based coefficient slot.
The winger’s current contract at Norwich runs until summer 2026, but with just 12 months remaining on a deal option, this summer represents a crucial window for sporting director Ben Knapper.
“We’re a business at the end of the day, so we need to make sure that things balance,” said Knapper. “If a player gets a fantastic opportunity to go and play in the Premier League or in a Champions League level, and a club steps forward with a proposal that is of a requisite level, then you have to be reasonable.”
Talks between Sainz’s representatives and City have already taken place, and a move back to Spain now appears increasingly likely. Athletic, who Sainz began his career with, are understood to be especially keen on a deal that would reunite the Basque-born talent with his boyhood club.
Villarreal, meanwhile, are said to have made direct contact with the player’s entourage and could rival Bilbao with a lucrative financial package and the allure of Champions League football.

Summer Rebuild Underway At Carrow Road
Sainz is not the only high-profile exit Norwich could face. United States international Josh Sargent is also being monitored by top-tier clubs, with Knapper hinting at further sales as part of a strategic summer refresh.
The Canaries are closing in on the appointment of Bristol City boss Liam Manning to replace Johannes Hoff Thorup, who was dismissed in April. The new head coach will be tasked with overseeing a squad transition that could include the departure of two of the Championship’s most sought-after players.
Knapper confirmed the club is not under immediate pressure to sell, but acknowledged that high-calibre bids for top performers would be considered as part of long-term planning.
Writer’s View
Borja Sainz was always going to attract attention after the season he’s had, and with Champions League football on offer, it’s hard to imagine him staying. Norwich fans will understand the pull of a return to Spain, especially with both interested clubs offering elite European exposure.
The priority now for Norwich must be ensuring they get a fair deal—financially and structurally. If Sainz does leave, reinvestment will be vital to ensure the next manager, likely Manning, isn’t left short on creativity. Either way, this deal could define the summer strategy at Carrow Road.
