National League Side Release Former 26-Goal Blackpool Striker

Gary Madine is a free agent once again after a turbulent spell with Hartlepool United.

The former Blackpool and Cardiff City striker is one of nine players released by the National League outfit this summer.

Uncertain Future for Journeyman Forward

Madine, 34, leaves Victoria Park after a single season in which he netted seven goals in 29 league outings. His time at the club followed a year out of football recovering from a serious cruciate ligament injury, during which he was supported by staff at his former club on the Fylde Coast.

Despite his limited impact in front of goal last term, Madine’s experience remains an asset. His professional career has included spells at Carlisle United, Sheffield Wednesday, Bolton Wanderers and Cardiff, as well as two stints at Bloomfield Road.

The striker’s journey began with Carlisle, where he graduated from the youth ranks to score 24 goals in 89 senior appearances. Loan spells at Rochdale, Coventry and Chesterfield preceded a move to South Yorkshire in 2011, where he helped fire Sheffield Wednesday to promotion from League One with 18 goals.

He later enjoyed a productive period at Bolton, registering 26 goals and 15 assists in 106 games. Though his time at Cardiff did not yield the same returns, it included a loan move to Sheffield United during their 2019 promotion campaign from the Championship.

Strong Blackpool Links Remain

Madine returned to Bloomfield Road in 2020 for a second spell and scored 26 goals in 116 appearances before injury halted his momentum. His release from Hartlepool now opens the door to a potential return to the EFL, with several League Two and ambitious National League clubs likely to weigh up a short-term deal for the powerful forward.

With Hartlepool now left with only ten senior players under contract, their own rebuilding job may be as dramatic as Madine’s next step. Whether the veteran striker gets one more chapter in his playing career remains to be seen.

Writer’s View

Gary Madine remains a name with weight in lower league circles, especially for fans of Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday. While his recent spell at Hartlepool was underwhelming in terms of numbers, it’s worth remembering that few players with his experience are readily available.

He may no longer be the focal point of a front three, but as an impact substitute or mentor figure, there’s still a role for him. Expect clubs seeking a seasoned forward with a physical edge to be among the first to make enquiries.
