York City Close In On Experienced EFL Midfielder

York City are closing in on the signing of veteran midfielder Ollie Banks, with reports suggesting a deal could be finalised shortly after the player returns from holiday.

The 32-year-old is out of contract this summer and was listed among a group of players still in talks when Chesterfield revealed their retained list. Despite ongoing discussions, it now appears Banks will join the Minstermen following their recent National League play-off exit.

Banks has made more than 200 appearances across two spells at the SMH Group Stadium, playing a pivotal role in two title-winning campaigns. However, it seems a longer-term offer from York has tipped the scales in favour of a switch, with co-owner Matt Uggla recently revealing he had “admired” the player for “quite some time.”

Minstermen Eye Promotion With Technical Talent

York City finished second in the National League this season with an impressive 96 points but were soundly beaten 3-0 at home by Oldham Athletic in the semi-final. Despite speculation that manager Adam Hinshelwood could be dismissed, the club swiftly issued a statement backing him to continue.

The addition of Banks would represent a clear statement of intent as York aim to go one better in 2025/26. Known for his technical quality and composed presence in midfield, Banks appears well suited to the possession-based approach favoured by Hinshelwood’s side.

Much like outgoing Chesterfield teammate Darren Oldaker—who is set to join Swindon Town—Banks was not actively seeking a departure. His affection for the Spireites and strong connection with the club’s fanbase are well documented. But with a longer deal on the table and a key role up for grabs, the opportunity at York has proven too good to turn down.

Writer’s View

Ollie Banks might be dropping a division, but the move to York City feels like an astute career decision. At 32, long-term security matters, and a team pushing hard for promotion presents a new kind of challenge. His wealth of experience could prove vital in steering the Minstermen to success next season.

York’s proactive stance, particularly after a play-off disappointment, suggests they’re not content with near misses. If the deal is wrapped up as expected, they’ll have landed one of the most accomplished midfielders in the division—without a transfer fee.
