Gillingham Announce Capture of Exciting 22-Year-Old

Gillingham have secured the services of striker Seb Palmer-Houlden from Bristol City on a three-year deal, sending an early message of ambition ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The 21-year-old made a lasting impression at Newport County during the 2023/24 season, scoring nine goals in 42 appearances across all competitions. His performances were a rare bright spark for a County side that struggled for consistency, and his high-energy, high-pressing style made him a fan favourite at Rodney Parade.

Exploits in South Wales

Palmer-Houlden’s exploits in South Wales earned him a new contract at Bristol City until 2027, and he gained further senior experience with Dundee in the Scottish Premiership, where he again found the net nine times. Despite that progress, he has now opted to leave Ashton Gate in search of regular football.

Gillingham moved quickly to secure his signature, agreeing an undisclosed fee with Bristol City. Palmer-Houlden said:

“I am so excited to be here and I can’t wait for the season to start and get going. I like to get fans off their seats, I like to press high, get in behind and score goals. I am looking forward to meeting the boys.”

Ainsworth Builds For Promotion Push

The Gills finished 17th in League Two last season despite operating with one of the division’s largest budgets. Gareth Ainsworth, appointed to lead a new era at Priestfield, has wasted little time in targeting players who fit his direct, energetic approach.

“Seb is a player we have been looking at for a while now and there was a lot of competition for his signature,” Ainsworth said.

“We managed to sort everything quickly and I am delighted to have him with us. He has a bright future in the game, he’s quick, hardworking, and knows where the goal is. I think all Gills fans will enjoy watching him.”

Palmer-Houlden’s arrival is a signal of Gillingham’s intent to compete at the top end of the table. His form at Newport, where he scored winners against Doncaster Rovers, Wrexham, and Swindon Town, showed his ability to perform in pressure situations.

Writer’s View

Gillingham’s signing of Seb Palmer-Houlden could prove to be one of the shrewdest moves of the summer. At just 21, he combines youthful potential with meaningful League Two and Scottish top-flight experience. His high-octane style is tailor-made for Ainsworth’s brand of football, and his arrival should bring excitement back to Priestfield.

For Newport County, his departure highlights the financial gap to their rivals. Though he fit their mould perfectly, they simply couldn’t match what Gillingham offered—a long-term deal and a clear pathway to success.
