Swansea City Considering Move For Former Premier League Striker

Swansea City are considering a move to bring their former striker Oli McBurnie back to the club now that he is a free agent, according to a BBC report.

The Scottish forward is available for nothing after his current side, Las Palmas, was relegated from La Liga.

Relegation Opens Door For Exit

McBurnie headed for Gran Canaria at the end of last season after leaving Sheffield United and signed a three-year deal. But, he struggled for form in La Liga, and his side has fallen short in their hopes of survival.

The Scotland international was reportedly a target for several Championship clubs during the January window, and his confirmation of the contract clause will likely reignite that interest.

McBurnie said,

“We didn’t reach our goal this year and we didn’t manage to stay up so my contract has gone from three years to being up again, so I’m a free agent.”

He went to discuss the next steps for him, suggesting a move back to English football would be preferable due to time away from his family.

“We’ve got one game left against Espanyol, then next week I’ll head back home for the summer and have a couple of weeks with the family. It’s lovely being out here but, at the same time, it’s hard being away from the family so much. We’ll talk and see what we want to do.”

A Return To South West Wales?

McBurnie, of course, is no stranger to The Swansea.com Stadium having spent four years at the club between 2015 and 2019, scoring 26 goals in 62 appearances.

The striker’s form in his final season with The Swans drew Sheffield United’s attention following their promotion to the Premier League. A nearly £20 million move followed, but McBurnie struggled to find his Swansea form at Bramall Lane.

What Will McBurnie Bring?

Swansea City only scored 51 league goals during the last campaign, with top scorer Liam Cullen scoring 11 of those. The new permanent manager, Alan Sheehan, will be hopeful that McBurnie can recapture the form he showed in his previous spell and add goals to his side.

McBurnie helped his current side by providing six assists and creating 24 chances for his teammates. He also brings defensive qualities to the team by winning a high number of duels, and aerial duels and making 40 recoveries for his team.

Writer’s View

It appears that McBurnie would like to move back to English football and, despite his meagre goal return, seems to have plenty of choice. They say never go back, but perhaps a return to Swansea, the club where he made his name, could be just what the striker needs to reignite his career.
