Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl appears to have cooled interest in the RB Leipzig job, with German reports now suggesting he sees his future in English football.
The 35-year-old was heavily linked with a return to his homeland earlier this month, even giving multiple interviews to German media in which he spoke about his credentials and readiness to step up to a Champions League club. In a particularly candid quote, Röhl told RB Live:
“If both sides are convinced that you’re the right coach, then there’s nothing wrong with taking the step to a Champions League club… I may have only been a head coach for just under two years, but I’ve been involved in football for a total of 16 years.”
He cited his extensive experience as an assistant at RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, Southampton, and with the German national team, suggesting that those roles had prepared him for a major managerial post.
However, Leipzig have since focused their attention elsewhere, with reports naming Oliver Glasner and Cesc Fàbregas as the club’s top two choices. Röhl, according to SportBild and Leipziger Volkszeitung, is no longer in serious contention and wasn’t even mentioned in updated candidate lists.
Röhl’s Focus Returns To England After Mixed German Reception
Following this snub, respected journalist Philipp Hinze revealed that there have been no recent discussions between Röhl and Leipzig. He added that “a move within England is currently more attractive than a transfer to the Bundesliga.”
While some observers suggest Röhl has simply changed his tune now that Leipzig’s interest has cooled, others believe the Wednesday boss is genuinely open to continued development in the English game, particularly after guiding the Owls to Championship survival in his first full season.
Röhl remains under contract at Hillsborough, where he has built a solid reputation for his detailed tactical approach and structured style of play. His work with limited resources has not gone unnoticed and he may yet become a target for other ambitious Championship or lower-end Premier League clubs this summer.
Still, the narrative surrounding his Leipzig courtship has shifted quickly—from eager interviewee to distanced observer. Whether this was a tactical play that didn’t land or simply a coach exploring options remains unclear.

Writer’s View
Danny Röhl has done an impressive job at Sheffield Wednesday, and it’s easy to see why he’d attract interest. But his very public flirtation with RB Leipzig might raise eyebrows in South Yorkshire, especially given the speed with which he’s now repositioning himself. If Leipzig had called, he’d have gone—let’s not pretend otherwise. But staying in England isn’t a bad outcome either.
He’s still learning as a head coach, and another year in the Championship could do him more good than an early step into the pressure cooker of Bundesliga elite. If he’s sincere about building something long-term, Wednesday fans will hope this is a recommitment—not a holding pattern.
