Middlesbrough Prospect Makes League One Move

Recently-released Middlesbrough defender Jack Hannah has secured his next move by signing a permanent two-year deal with Queen of the South.

The 22-year-old centre-back impressed during a season-long loan in Scottish League One, making 36 appearances and playing a key role as Queens finished third. Although the Dumfries side narrowly missed out on promotion via the play-offs, Hannah’s performances earned him both praise and a Player of the Year award from supporters.

Now a free agent following his release by Boro, Hannah has opted to rejoin the club where he flourished—putting pen to paper on a deal that gives both player and club stability ahead of the new campaign.

“I have loved my season at Queens,” Hannah told the club’s official site. “It’s a fantastic club with so much potential. I feel I have really grown and learned so much having had the chance to play regular first-team football. I came here as a boy in the summer and a year on I have grown into a man.”

Family Focus And Managerial Praise

Hannah, born in Stockton-on-Tees, joined Middlesbrough’s academy at just eight years old and spent 14 years with the club. While he didn’t make a senior appearance at the Riverside, his development pathway saw him experience senior football during his time in Scotland.

His move back to Queen of the South was widely expected, with the player revealing he always intended to return—though wanted to focus on the play-offs before confirming any decision. He also noted that settling his future was important for personal reasons, with his partner expecting a child this summer. Manager Peter Murphy was full of praise for the young defender, stating:

“When Jack joined in the summer, we knew he was very good technically and tactically, and would be aggressive, physical and would dominate in the air—and what a fantastic signing he has proven to be. His contribution was recognised by the supporters when he picked up a Player of the Year award. We’re delighted to have agreed a two-year deal.”

Hannah’s return offers continuity for a club pushing for promotion and reflects a broader ambition at Queens to build on last season’s progress.

Writer’s View

This is a clever move from both club and player. Jack Hannah’s loan spell was a genuine success story—consistent minutes, strong development, and fan recognition. For Queen of the South, locking in a player who already understands the system and the expectations offers a seamless transition into next season.

For Hannah, this is a chance to step out from the shadow of the academy circuit and establish himself as a proper first-team pro. With League One ambitions still burning at Palmerston, this could be the foundation of something big for both sides.
