Reading are reportedly monitoring Ross County’s Ronan Hale as they plan an ambitious push for promotion from League One next season.
The 26-year-old has caught the eye of several clubs, including Wigan Athletic and newly relegated Luton Town, but it is the Royals who appear most poised to firm up their interest.
The Berkshire club narrowly missed out on a play-off place in 2024/25, finishing just three points adrift, but optimism is high at the Select Car Leasing Stadium following a recent takeover. Manager Noel Hunt is now looking to add firepower to his side, and Hale’s name has been placed high on the list of priorities.
Hale, who joined Ross County last summer on a deal running until 2027, has been one of the few bright sparks in a difficult season for the Scottish Premiership strugglers. He has scored 15 goals across all competitions, including a last-gasp penalty against Dundee this week that kept his side’s survival hopes alive.
Big moment striker
A clinical finisher with a knack for big moments, Hale has scored against a host of top-flight opponents this season, including Celtic, Hearts, and Motherwell. His form has not only sparked interest from England but has also earned him call-ups to the Northern Ireland senior squad.
The former Crusaders forward is believed to be open to a move south, and Reading’s League One status – combined with their upward momentum – could make them a tempting option. Goals will be crucial in the Royals’ bid to escape the third tier, and Hale’s proven scoring record could fill the void left by last season’s inconsistent forward line.
According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, all three interested English clubs are closely monitoring the striker’s situation. While Ross County are under no pressure to sell due to Hale’s long-term contract, the lure of English football – and the potential for a significant transfer fee – may sway the Highland club.
Whether Reading choose to move quickly or play the waiting game could prove decisive. With pre-season on the horizon and promotion ambitions clear, Hunt may look to secure Hale early to bed him in ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Writer’s View
Ronan Hale would be an excellent addition for Reading – not only is he in form, but his experience across multiple leagues makes him more rounded than many typical League One strikers. The Royals need a consistent goal scorer if they’re serious about mounting a promotion challenge, and Hale’s physicality and confidence in front of goal suggest he could thrive in English football.
While competition from Wigan and Luton is notable, Reading’s forward-looking rebuild and renewed energy under new ownership could be the deciding factor. If they act decisively, this could prove one of the shrewdest signings of the summer.
