Mustapha Bundu has opted to leave Plymouth Argyle following their relegation to League One.
The forward has rejected a new contract offer and is now attracting attention from clubs in England and Germany.
Bundu to Depart as Argyle Rebuild Begins
The 28-year-old Sierra Leone international will become a free agent this summer, bringing his two-year spell at Home Park to an end. Bundu’s agent, former Denmark defender John Sivebaek, confirmed the decision, attributing it to the player’s ambition to remain at a higher level than League One.
“Mustapha has been very happy to be at Plymouth and to play for them,” said Sivebaek. “Unfortunately, they went down and he has some ambitions. He’s not really keen on playing in League One, he wants to try something else. That’s the fact and I informed Plymouth about that.”
Signed from Anderlecht in the summer of 2023, Bundu played 70 matches for the Pilgrims, scoring 14 goals. He became a key attacking figure under successive managers, finishing the 2024/25 campaign as the club’s second-highest scorer with 11 goals in all competitions. His late-season form included six goals in the final ten matches as Argyle battled for Championship survival.
Bundu’s contributions extended beyond league duties. He played a pivotal role in Argyle’s remarkable FA Cup run, which saw them eliminate Premier League sides Brentford and Liverpool before bowing out valiantly against Manchester City.
Despite their eventual relegation, Plymouth’s strong form under head coach Miron Muslić offered reasons for optimism. The Austrian’s impact lifted Argyle into the upper reaches of the division’s form table, but the change came too late to avoid the drop.
With Bundu out of contract at the end of June, his representative confirmed that discussions are ongoing with clubs in both England and Germany.
“There is possibilities in England, also possibilities in Germany, so it’s up to him to decide where he wants to continue his career,” said Sivebaek. “We are talking to a lot of clubs. Where it will end, I honestly don’t know.”
Bundu becomes the second forward to leave the club in recent weeks, following the release of New Zealand international Ben Waine. His departure comes after the January exit of Morgan Whittaker to Middlesbrough and the sales of Finn Azaz, Michael Cooper, and Lewis Gibson.

Writer’s View
Bundu’s exit will sting, not just for the loss of his ability but for what it represents. His six goals in ten games kept the faintest hope of survival alive, and he was one of the few players to elevate his performances as the pressure mounted.
Yet his decision reflects the reality Argyle now face — their most ambitious talents will look elsewhere. While there’s no bitterness from either party, replacing that output won’t be easy. If there’s a silver lining, it’s that the club now has the space and resources to build anew, with Muslić fully at the helm and supporters hopeful that the green shoots of a brighter future are already emerging.
