Doncaster Rovers Boss Makes League One Transfer Statement

Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann has revealed plans for a busy summer as the club prepares for life back in League One.

The title-winning manager is targeting up to seven new signings to make his side competitive in the third tier next season.

McCann Eyes Key Additions After Title Glory

The 2024/25 League Two champions are aiming higher, and the boss believes the club’s backing will allow them to challenge.

“We didn’t want to go into another division and just be floating around in there,” said McCann, who praised owner Terry Bramall and CEO Gavin Baldwin for their continued support.

“We want to have a budget that we feel can give us a chance, and they’ve certainly done that. I didn’t expect anything less. They want to help push us to that next level.”

McCann is aiming for six or seven arrivals, with recruitment already well underway. “Those conversations are happening already,” he confirmed. “If anyone knows me, I don’t like to wait. I like to get into targets early.”

He revealed that he met a player this week, adding, “The conversation went well and I’m hoping that progresses well and there’s some news before the end of the week.”

While McCann expects a mix of loans and permanent signings, he insists the club will remain diligent within their financial limits. “I’ve got to work diligently in terms of the budget, but I feel that’s a strength of mine.”

He added that Doncaster are open to paying fees if necessary and that recruitment plans have been in place since January. “We’re in all markets,” he said. “We’ll stick to that plan, work our way through that list and hopefully we’ll get our targets.”

Currently, Rovers have 19 senior players on the books, but that number could rise depending on ongoing contract discussions.

Among those yet to make a decision are Ian Lawlor, Tom Anderson, Bobby Faulkner and Billy Sharp. McCann has asked for clarity by Monday, as he shapes the squad ahead of pre-season. However, one departure has already been confirmed, with centre-back Joseph Olowu turning down two improved offers and set to leave the club.

McCann appears unfazed by the uncertainty. With a strong squad core and financial backing, he’s confident the Rovers can adapt quickly to the demands of League One.

Writer’s View

Doncaster Rovers appear to be approaching this summer window with a sense of purpose. Grant McCann has built a strong reputation for getting business done early, and his clarity about targets and timelines reflects a club operating with stability and ambition.

Unlike some promoted sides who scramble for last-minute reinforcements, Rovers are putting a structured plan into action—one that has been months in the making. With financial backing and continuity, McCann is right to feel confident. The key now lies in executing that plan effectively, especially in a League One division that looks more competitive than ever.
