Colchester United Boss Reveals Key To Momentum Next Season

Colchester United boss Danny Cowley says keeping the core of his current squad together is the key to building momentum ahead of the 2025–26 League Two campaign.

With several contracts set to expire, Cowley is aiming for evolution rather than revolution at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Cowley Eyes Continuity as Colchester Plot Promotion Push

As the club prepares to publish its retained list, Cowley is prioritising stability over sweeping changes. His strategy comes in the midst of a proposed takeover by Lightwell Sports Group, which could bring added ambition to the Essex outfit.

“For us, the ambition is to try to keep as much of this group together as we can,” said Cowley.

“We’re hoping that we can find a springboard in the coming weeks and months to really propel the club forward.”

Colchester finished the 2024–25 campaign strongly, with form in the second half of the season that Cowley believes would have been enough for automatic promotion over a full year. That run has given him confidence that minimal changes could set the team up for a genuine promotion challenge.

“Our next challenge is to keep this group intact so we don’t need a complete rebuild,” he explained. “We do really feel like we have a platform now that we can push on from.”

The U’s will lose at least one influential figure, with Jamie McDonnell set to return to parent club Nottingham Forest. Cowley also acknowledged the reality of Colchester’s financial model, which may require the sale of emerging talent to maintain long-term growth.

“Young players will attract interest from above—we understand that. Sometimes we have to sell to grow.”

Still, Cowley is excited by the club’s youth prospects, highlighting players such as Oscar Thorn, Kyreece Lisbie and Milton Oni as key figures for the future.

“It’s always great when you’ve got young players growing in front of your eyes,” he added. “It’s super exciting.”

With a strong spine, developed relationships, and emerging talent, Cowley is determined to avoid disruption and use the existing momentum to fuel a serious promotion push in 2025–26.

Writer’s View

Danny Cowley’s approach is measured and forward-thinking. Rather than overhaul a squad that showed promotion-calibre form in the latter part of the season, he’s focused on retention and incremental improvement. That kind of stability is often underrated in League Two, where reactive overhauls can disrupt progress.

With the potential backing of new owners and a clear sense of continuity, Colchester United could be poised to move from mid-table to serious contenders. If Cowley can hold on to his key players while nurturing the club’s exciting crop of youngsters, the U’s could become one of next season’s dark horses.
