Promotion-Winning Star Departs Doncaster Rovers After Contract Snub

Doncaster Rovers have been dealt a significant blow ahead of their League One return, with influential defender Joseph Olowu set to leave the club after turning down a new contract offer.

The 24-year-old former Arsenal academy product was one of five players offered fresh terms at the end of the campaign, but manager Grant McCann confirmed in a club interview that Olowu had informed him of his decision before the season concluded.

“We offered Joseph a very good contract,” said McCann. “But he came to me just before the season finished to tell me that he’d like to find a new club. He feels like he needs a fresh challenge. It’s disappointing… we wish him nothing but success.”

Joseph Olowu Career

Olowu, who joined Rovers in September 2021 following a successful trial under Richie Wellens, quickly established himself as a key figure. He made 144 appearances for the club and was instrumental in their defensive stability throughout the 2024–25 campaign, despite missing the title run-in after suffering a thigh injury in March.

His absence during the final weeks of the season didn’t prevent him from being named Doncaster’s player of the season, a recognition of his consistent excellence across the campaign. Yet speculation surrounding his future had grown steadily, with McCann previously hinting at his hopes of tying the player down long-term.

Olowu began his career with Arsenal at the age of eight and spent time on loan with Cork City and Wealdstone before leaving the Emirates in 2021. He also trialled with Manchester United before eventually signing with Doncaster, where he quickly became a fans’ favourite.

His departure now leaves a significant gap in Rovers’ back line as they prepare for life back in the third tier. McCann admitted the club is already well into recruitment for that position, but acknowledged Olowu’s contribution both on and off the pitch.

“Him as a person, as a character and for how he performed this season, he’s been outstanding. He’s a lovely lad and we wish him nothing but success,” added McCann.

Doncaster now turn their attention to replacing the highly-rated centre-half, who will attract significant interest as a free agent this summer.

Writer’s View

Losing Joseph Olowu is a setback for Doncaster Rovers, no matter how well the club prepares for it. While his desire for a new challenge is understandable after three successful years at the Eco-Power Stadium, his departure strips the team of a proven leader at a critical time. Replacing a player of his quality—and character—won’t be easy.

McCann’s admission that the club is “ahead of the game” in recruitment is encouraging, but Rovers will need to act quickly and smartly to maintain the momentum of promotion. Olowu’s next move will be watched with interest, particularly by League One and Championship sides in need of a composed, modern centre-back.
