Queens Park Rangers Seeking Agreement With 27-Year-Old

Queens Park Rangers have offered Paul Smyth a new contract as they look to retain one of their most consistent performers heading into another transitional summer at Loftus Road.

Smyth, 27, is entering the final year of his current deal, which runs until June 2026, but Rangers are eager to extend his stay. The Northern Ireland international made 42 appearances across all competitions in the 2024/25 campaign, scoring twice and showcasing his trademark energy and adaptability.

Paul Smyth’s Career

Capable of playing on either wing or at wing-back, Smyth’s versatility has made him a key figure in QPR’s squad since rejoining the club from Leyton Orient in 2023. He previously spent four years at Loftus Road between 2017 and 2021, having been signed from Linfield, and also had loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Wycombe Wanderers and Accrington Stanley during that period.

Since returning, he has amassed 87 Championship appearances, proving a reliable outlet under both Marti Cifuentes and, more recently, caretaker boss Kevin Betsy, who guided the team to a 1-0 win at Sunderland on the final day of the season.

Smyth’s return to QPR followed a successful stint at Leyton Orient, where he netted 14 times in 68 games and helped guide the O’s to promotion. That form prompted Rangers to bring him back to west London— a decision that has since paid dividends.

“Paul has been a real asset for us this season. He brings energy, commitment and can play multiple roles across the pitch,” a club source told West London Sport. “We’re hopeful he’ll extend his stay and remain part of what we’re building here.”

QPR finished 15th in the Championship and are now searching for a new permanent head coach following Cifuentes’ departure. The next appointment will be tasked with shaping the squad ahead of the 2025/26 season, where further ins and outs are expected.

Swiss striker Michael Frey, 30, is another player the club want to keep, and they are set to trigger a one-year extension clause in his current deal. Talks may follow over a longer-term agreement, while midfielder Jonathan Varane has already committed his future by signing a new contract.

Writer’s View

Offering Paul Smyth a new deal is a smart move by QPR. He may not be the flashiest player in the Championship, but he’s one of the most dependable — a fan favourite with a tireless work ethic and genuine versatility.

Keeping him not only preserves squad depth but also gives the incoming manager a reliable performer to build around. In a summer of likely change at Loftus Road, retaining Smyth could prove to be one of QPR’s best early decisions.
