Recently relegated Premier League outfit Sunderland have identified Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson as a potential replacement for Aaron Ramsdale, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
The 24-year-old has established himself as first choice at the Stadium of Light over the past few years, playing a key role in their recent fourth-placed finish in the Championship. Having emerged through the academy at Wearside, he nailed down a starting berth during the second half of the 2021/22 campaign, which saw Sunderland earn promotion from League One.
Patterson has featured in all but four of the Black Cats’ league outings this season, keeping 14 clean sheets. This has seen him attract interest from elsewhere, including from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley.
Southampton Add Their Name To List Of Admirers
Southampton earned themselves a place in the Premier League with a play-off triumph over Leeds United a year ago. This saw them bring in England international Aaron Ramsdale last summer on a four-year deal.
Despite that, it has been a season to forget for the Saints. Their relegation back to the Championship is already confirmed, with them on course to equal Derby County’s worst ever Premier League points tally. As such, Ramsdale is expected to depart St Mary’s this summer, either on loan or on a permanent deal.
According to Nixon, Patterson is a player in which the Hampshire-based side are keen on, although there is an acceptance that their interest is fully dependant on Sunderland’s play-off campaign. Regis Le Bris is currently preparing his team for a two-legged semi final clash with Coventry City.
Should they earn promotion to the top tier for the first time since 2017, it is unlikely that the former England under-21 international would consider staying in the Championship.
The report also states that Southampton are also keen on Ivory Coast international Yahia Fofana, who is currently playing in France with Angers.
Writer’s View
Sunderland have consistently been in the headlines this season, with a number of their stars attracting interest from home and abroad. The likes of Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham are both linked with giants such as Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, as well as Premier League stalwarts Manchester United and Chelsea. Patterson is another who will be a target if they fail to achieve success in the play-offs. These next few weeks are incredibly important for the Black Cats. Not only because of the riches which come with Premier League football, but that a number of players could leave if they were to remain in the Championship.
