Mark Hughes looks set to remain at Carlisle United as they enter the National League, with talks “moving in the right direction”
Despite The Blues being sent down to non-league, the former Bradford City and Stoke City boss has given the Cumbrian side a much-needed boost in their darkest hour. He picked up points in 10 of his 17 matches in charge, and cut the relegation battle closer than it was when Mike Williamson was sacked in February.
Hughes Discusses Extension
The 61-year-old was originally signed on a rolling contract when replacing Williamson, but good results despite their fate being sealed last week have led to talks about keeping him at the club beyond the end of the season.
Speaking to BBC Radio Cumbria ahead of their final day match against Salford City, Hughes was asked if he would be open to remaining with the club in the fifth tier. He said (Quotes via Carlisle News and Star):
“I think that’s where I am. It’s been difficult, and we haven’t achieved and I haven’t achieved what I set out to do but I’ve really enjoyed the time I’ve had here.
“I’ve had a fantastic welcome and support from everybody in Carlisle. So that part of it I’ve really enjoyed, and just getting back on the touchline and having the opportunity to manage teams through difficult games and difficult circumstances…that’s what really gets me going, that’s what I miss when I’m out of the game.
“So let’s see what happens. If there’s a will on all sides to do it then it’ll happen.”
Writer’s View
Mark Hughes may not have managed to mount an escape for Carlisle United, but he has removed an element of the toxicity surrounding the club during his tenure. Whilst there are still major dividing points between the fans and the ownership, Sparky has breathed a new lease of life into the side and handing him a new contract will be welcomed by all. The Piataks will need to invest heavily to bounce back into League Two next season with some quality side in the National League, but with a figure like Hughes at the helm, they will fancy their chances.
