Birmingham City Rewrite League One History

Birmingham City surged into the record books once again as they defeated Blackpool 2-0 at Bloomfield Road, claiming the highest-ever points total in a single EFL season.

Goals from Ethan Laird and Alfie May sealed the win and secured an extraordinary 108-point tally – with one more match still to come.

Inevitable Outcome

It was a night where history seemed inevitable from the outset. The visitors dominated from the first whistle, controlling possession and dictating play with the confidence of champions. Blackpool, to their credit, improved after the break, but the damage had long been done.

Ethan Laird set the tone with a commanding header late in the first half. The delivery from Marc Leonard was pinpoint, and Laird’s leap at the far post gave goalkeeper Harry Tyrer no chance.

After the restart, the outcome was quickly cemented. A direct ball from goalkeeper Ryan Allsop caused chaos at the back, allowing Alfie May to pounce with characteristic composure and slot home his side’s second. His 51st-minute finish epitomised Birmingham’s sharp edge in attack.

From then on, it was about control. Chris Davies’ side never looked like surrendering their lead, showing tactical discipline and a willingness to manage the match with maturity. Even as Blackpool mustered a few late chances, the Blues’ back line held firm.

There was an air of inevitability about this win – not in the sense of overconfidence, but the result of months of elite consistency. Birmingham have now lost just three matches all season, and their dominance on the road has matched their form at St Andrew’s.

The away support, vocal throughout, were treated to more than just three points. They witnessed history. Davies, who has crafted a winning culture in record time, took the applause with a signature fist pump and a moment of reflection alongside his players.

Despite Blackpool’s improvement in the second half, and tactical tweaks from Steve Bruce, they lacked the spark to break Birmingham down. And by the time the crowd found its voice, the match was already out of reach.

Writer’s View

Birmingham City’s rise this season has been phenomenal – but it’s the authority with which they’ve done it that’s most impressive. Davies has created a side that not only wins, but wins convincingly, adapting to every challenge with control.

The likes of Laird, May and Leonard have been outstanding, and their ruthlessness has redefined expectations. With the points record now shattered, one question remains: how much higher can this team go?
