Gustavo Hamer has revealed why he snubbed summer interest from Championship rivals Leeds United, choosing instead to remain with Sheffield United in pursuit of an immediate Premier League return.
The Dutch midfielder was subject to intense speculation during the 2024 summer transfer window, with Leeds reportedly submitting a £13 million bid, which also included Joel Piroe in a proposed swap deal. United were unimpressed by the offer and rejected it outright, describing it as “derisory” according to reports in The Star.
Hamer’s decision to stay proved pivotal. He became the driving force in midfield for Chris Wilder’s side, helping to stabilise the team after relegation and a turbulent pre-season that saw a limited transfer budget and numerous squad departures.
The 27-year-old, who joined the Blades in 2023, was named the club’s Player of the Season and has now offered an insight into the conversations that convinced him to remain.
“I knew how the club was, I knew how the fans were, and I really enjoyed the six months I had with the manager in the Premier League,” Hamer said. “We had words just in pre-season, and we looked ourselves in the eyes and we said we can do this this season.
“Of course, there were some sounds, but that was, I think, more to make some chaos in the media personally. So we looked at each other, we shook hands, and we said let’s do it this season, and if there was anything I needed from my manager throughout the season. I think that brought us there for all with the confidence that the gaffer gives out to us.”
Youngsters Step Up as Hamer Anchors Midfield
While United’s limited resources might have forced some stars to consider their futures, Hamer saw opportunity. Talents like Oliver Arblaster, Sydie Peck, and Andre Brooks were promoted, while savvy free transfers such as Tyrese Campbell and Callum O’Hare provided a much-needed boost.
Hamer dismissed concerns that the team lacked depth or direction, crediting the club’s academy and Wilder’s leadership for maintaining standards during a challenging rebuild.

Gustavo Hamer could easily have walked away from Bramall Lane last summer—but he didn’t. Instead, he backed Chris Wilder, backed the squad, and became the heart of Sheffield United’s promotion charge. Loyalty like this is rare in modern football, and Hamer’s commitment, maturity, and belief in youth development suggest he’s not just a great player, but the foundation of a club looking upward once again.
