“Haven’t Got That Sort of Money” – Boss Reflects On Lincoln City Loanee

Rob Street’s successful loan spell at Doncaster Rovers has sparked discussions over a possible return, with boss Grant McCann hinting at further negotiations once internal contract talks are underway.

Street’s Impressive Impact

Street, who joined Doncaster on loan from Lincoln City in January, has made a significant impression, scoring 10 goals in just 21 appearances to help fire Rovers to League One promotion. His performances have earned widespread praise and prompted questions about his future at the club.

While promotion celebrations have only just begun, McCann is already looking ahead. Speaking after Rovers’ victory over Bradford City, which sealed automatic promotion, the manager confirmed that the club would soon move onto securing players for next season. Street remains a major part of those conversations — but a permanent move looks unlikely due to financial constraints.

“Hopefully he’s not in Lincoln’s plans next year and we can sweep him again! I don’t know what the plans are with Rob.

“I’ve not spoken to Lincoln about him. I know he’s got another three years left on his contract so it certainly wouldn’t be a permanent (deal) because we haven’t got that sort of money to go and splash. But we’ll see.”

Street’s journey has seen him rise from Crystal Palace’s youth system, with loan spells at Torquay United, Newport County and Shrewsbury Town helping to shape his development. After a short stint at Cheltenham Town, he moved to Lincoln last summer, but struggled for minutes before making the move to Doncaster in January 2025.

The 23-year-old quickly became a fans’ favourite at the Eco-Power Stadium, offering consistent goalscoring threat and an impressive work ethic that has perfectly aligned with McCann’s plans. His impact has been vital in ensuring Doncaster’s return to the third tier at the first time of asking.

With several senior players out of contract and five loan players — including Street — due to return to their parent clubs, Doncaster face a critical summer of squad planning. Street’s future will undoubtedly be one of the key topics discussed as the club prepares for life back in League One.

Writer’s View

Rob Street’s contribution to Doncaster’s promotion push cannot be understated. While Grant McCann is realistic about the challenges of securing a permanent deal, another loan move would be a huge coup for Rovers. His energy, finishing ability, and attitude have been vital, and keeping him at the club could be key to building momentum ahead of the new season in League One.
