Lincoln City Boss Issues Striker Update

Lincoln City head coach Michael Skubala has reaffirmed his desire to bring in a new striker this month, although it is likely to be later in the transfer window.

The Imps woes in front have goal have been well documented in recent weeks. Their 1-0 defeat against Bolton Wanderers in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday means they have scored just once in the last six games in all competitions, with that coming from the penalty spot.

Lincoln travel to Northampton Town on Saturday on a run of four league games without a goal and with one win in 12. Sheffield Wednesday loanee Bailey Cadamarteri is the club’s joint top scorer this season with five, alongside Ben House. Fellow attackers Jovon Makama and Freddie Draper have two in League One.

Striker Remains The Priority

Skubala has already lost one striker this month, with Rob Street joining Doncaster Rovers on loan. He could be joined by Draper, who is heavily rumoured to be joining League Two leaders Walsall.

The head coach has made no secret of the fact he wants an experienced face at the top end of the pitch. Speaking to BBC Radio Lincolnshirehe admits that the club are still working on it, although it could be later in the transfer window before they solve the issue:

“There’s definitely movement. I don’t think I’ve shied away that I would like some experience up top.

“All the good young strikers in the building, they are young and inexperienced. I’d like an experienced striker in the building if we can get one over the line.

“But the nature of January is that they’re very expensive. Everybody’s after the same or you have to pay big money for a transfer.

“That’s our first target. (It) probably won’t be the first one in the building because we still want to improve in certain areas as well and add quality and depth, experience in some other areas. The first target is definitely to get a bit more experience on the top line to help the group.

“I think you’ll probably see a couple of new faces in the building over the next few days. It might not be a striker. That’s probably going to come later down the line, but we’re trying really, really hard to get the right one that can improve us.”

Writer’s View

Lincoln fans will be delighted to hear that the club are working on potential deals to bring a striker to the club. The only frustration will be that it is not imminent, especially with Draper looking on his way out. Although the 20-year-old isn’t first choice, he could leave Skubala temporarily short on depth. It’ll be a case that he has to make do with what he has for the trip to Northampton, but he will be hoping that deals can be completed before the visit of Peterborough United on January 25th.
