Paul Warne may only have just arrived at MK Dons, but he has wasted no time setting his sights on the summer rebuild—starting with the forward line.
The newly installed head coach has already pinpointed two attacking targets he hopes will help transform the club’s firepower ahead of the new League Two campaign. Despite having only led the team in two fixtures, Warne has moved swiftly to share his vision with the recruitment team, signalling a determined approach to reshaping the squad in time for August.
Currently, Scott Hogan leads the club’s scoring chart among forwards with eight goals. However, that figure is overshadowed by midfielder Alex Gilbey, who appears likely to finish the season as top scorer with 11. The collective return from other strikers—Callum Hendry, Ellis Harrison and Danilo Orsi—adds up to just a dozen between them.
Warne, whose preference for energetic, high-pressing football has been well documented, believes his team needs a sharper edge up front if they’re to reflect his identity on the pitch.
“There are names there I really like, and potentially if I could get two on the front line I’m looking at I’ll be really happy,” he said. “I know how I want it to look.”
The head coach revealed that even before officially stepping in, he had already visualised how his team should play. Warne has called for a structured, planned approach to recruitment—insisting he does not want a “make-it-up-as-you-go” transfer window. He wants wingers with pace, strikers with daring, and an injection of aggression to mirror his footballing principles.
His first week in charge has also revealed some surprises. A handful of players, previously unknown to him, have caught his eye—potentially influencing his recruitment priorities.
“Some players who I didn’t know before have won me over,” Warne admitted, reflecting on the early days of his reign. He noted that while performances have yet to hit their peak, the team’s defensive solidity and character have laid encouraging groundwork.
MK Dons have picked up four points from two matches under Warne’s watch, but he knows much more is needed if the club is to mount a serious challenge next season.
“There will be a lot more to this team come next season,” he added.

Warne’s rapid move to identify key signings reflects a manager who is not content to simply inherit a squad—he wants to mould it. With a clear tactical blueprint and an emphasis on discipline, energy and forward thrust, MK Dons fans should expect a significant shift in both style and substance this summer. If the club can back Warne in the market, there’s every chance they’ll emerge as a revitalised force come August.
