Newport County Part Ways With Nelson Jardim

Newport County have confirmed the departure of head coach Nelson Jardim, just days after the club secured their League Two status for another season.

The Exiles announced on Wednesday that Jardim has left Rodney Parade by mutual consent, with only two matches remaining in the campaign. The decision comes after Monday’s goalless draw with Walsall ensured their safety in the division, drawing a line under a turbulent season of transition.

Contract Expiring

Jardim’s contract was due to expire this summer, but both parties agreed an early exit was the right move. Chairman Huw Jenkins, who has had a longstanding relationship with the Portuguese coach, praised Jardim for his commitment and leadership during a challenging spell.

“I have known Nelson for 15 years and we have always been open and honest with each other. He felt that it was best for him and the club to move on with just two games left and our league status now secure,” Jenkins said. “I can’t thank Nelson enough for his hard work, commitment and loyalty, especially as he left his young family in Portugal to take on the role. His main goal was to keep the club in League Two during a season of transition so that we can start building for the future.”

Jardim took the reins at Newport during a major overhaul both on and off the pitch. From reshaping the playing squad to adapting internal operations, the 2024/25 season has been anything but routine. Despite inconsistencies, he achieved the key target of survival—something that appeared far from guaranteed at times.

Newport currently sit 20th in the table. Their remaining fixtures include an away trip to Fleetwood Town before a final-day clash at home to Tranmere Rovers—a match that may have a significant bearing on Carlisle United’s survival hopes. Carlisle, second-bottom, will be hoping to take their relegation fight to the last game, depending on this weekend’s results.

The club has not yet announced who will take charge for the final two fixtures, but a caretaker team is expected to be confirmed imminently.

Writer’s View

Jardim’s exit feels both timely and telling. With the season’s primary objective accomplished, his departure allows Newport to begin planning with clarity for the future. Whether they opt for an experienced hand like Gary Monk or a fresh face such as Cameron Toshack, the next appointment will be pivotal. Jardim departs having steadied a rocking ship—and for that, he leaves with credibility and respect intact.
