Lincoln City Winger Named EA Sports FC EFL Young Player of the Month

Lincoln City winger Jovon Makama has been recognised for his blistering performances throughout March, being named the EA Sports FC EFL Young Player of the Month.

The 20-year-old lit up the month with five goals and three assists across just six games, earning widespread acclaim.

Makama Shines Bright Following Formation Shift

Makama, who started his youth career with Derby County, has seen a sharp upward trajectory since joining Lincoln City as an Academy Scholar in 2020. After turning professional in May 2021, he made his first-team debut in the Carabao Cup against Doncaster Rovers in August 2022. His first Lincoln goal came shortly after in the EFL Trophy, now known as the Vertu Trophy, where he showcased his potential.

This latest accolade is not Makama’s only recognition in March, as he also clinched the League One Player of the Month award. A key to his recent success has been a positional change under head coach Michael Skubala. Transitioning from striker to a wider role on the right in a 4-2-3-1 setup has allowed Makama to fully exploit his pace and delivery skills, culminating in a memorable first professional hat-trick against Bristol Rovers.

“It means a lot, you put in a lot of work through the whole season and it’s good that at the end of a very strong month for myself that you’re rewarded with things like this. It means a lot to my family as well, there’s a lot of work behind the scenes with my family pushing me and also members of staff at the club.”

Makama’s development has been notably influenced by Skubala’s mentorship. The winger credits the coach with keeping his confidence high and constantly offering advice to push him further. Despite already spending a few years in the first-team environment, Makama acknowledges there’s still much to learn — a journey made smoother with Skubala’s guidance.

Reflecting on his remarkable hat-trick and the fans’ overwhelming support, Makama described it as a career-defining moment he will cherish forever. His words underline the bond he shares with the Lincoln faithful, who have been pivotal in his growth this season.

Writer’s View

Makama’s transition to a wide attacking role could not have come at a better time for both the player and Lincoln City. His electric form in March shows he is thriving under Skubala’s leadership and the tactical switch. If he maintains this trajectory, Makama might soon attract interest from higher leagues — a testament to both his talent and Lincoln’s developmental work.
