Crewe Alexandra Blow: Winger Set to Miss Season Finale

Crewe Alexandra have been dealt a major setback with winger Jack Lankester ruled out for the rest of the season following knee surgery.

Lankester undergoes surgery after injury at Bradford

The 25-year-old limped off during the second half of Crewe’s 2-0 defeat to Bradford City on 5 April. Manager Lee Bell has now confirmed the former Cambridge United player has undergone a successful operation on a torn meniscus and will not return until pre-season training.

Lankester, who joined Crewe from Cambridge United last summer, has been a regular contributor for Bell’s side, scoring seven goals and creating several key chances during the League Two campaign. His ability to unlock defences and produce moments of quality will be sorely missed as the Railwaymen aim to mount a late surge into the play-off positions.

Speaking about the situation, Bell praised the winger’s impact and offered an encouraging outlook regarding his recovery.

“I feel for Jack. He had the shot at Bradford that hit the post and he twisted his knee. He’s had a meniscus tear operated on, which these days are pretty routine. It’s gone really well, so we’re looking to get him back for pre-season. He’s a terrific player who makes such a difference to us.”

Career so far and impact at Crewe

Lankester began his career at Ipswich Town, progressing through the youth system before breaking into the first team during the 2018-19 season. Despite early promise, his development was disrupted by serious back injuries that sidelined him for long periods. A move to Cambridge United in 2021 revitalised his career, leading to his transfer to Crewe in June 2024.

Since arriving at Gresty Road, Lankester has quickly established himself as a key figure. His first goal for Crewe came during a 3-0 victory over Harrogate Town in September 2024, and he has remained a regular starter throughout the season. His technical quality and attacking instincts have been central to Crewe’s positive performances.

Currently 11th in League Two with a few matches left, Crewe are still within striking distance of a play-off place, but Lankester’s absence presents a major challenge for Bell and his players in the critical final weeks.

Writer’s view

Lankester’s injury is a big blow for Crewe’s promotion hopes. His creative spark and goal threat offered a different dimension to the side.

However, with the surgery going well and a full pre-season ahead, the club can be optimistic that he will return even stronger next season, ready to make a major impact once again.
