Cardiff City’s hopes of avoiding relegation took another hit this weekend, and with pressure mounting, former club captain Jason Perry has raised alarm bells about the club’s leadership — and lack of support for manager Omer Riza.
Saturday’s 1-0 home loss to Stoke City, courtesy of a late own goal, leaves Cardiff stuck in the Championship drop zone with just four games to save their season. While Derby County currently sit a point above them in 21st, the Welsh club has now won just once in their last nine outings, and their lack of direction on and off the pitch is raising serious concerns.
Riza Left to Fight Alone?
Riza, who stepped in after Erol Bulut’s departure in September, now finds his own position under scrutiny, with the 44-year-old admitting after the defeat that his future lies in the hands of the board. When asked if he would be in charge for the final four fixtures, he responded candidly: “I don’t know, you’ve got to ask the board, it’s not my place to answer that question.”
That uncertainty has sparked strong words from Perry, who believes Riza is being hung out to dry.
“He’s got no support. I do feel he’s just left there and on his own so he’s just going to have to find a solution. He’s going to have to gather the supporters together, he’s going to have to gather the players together.”
The Bluebirds face a gruelling run-in, starting with a trip to Sheffield United on Friday. Home fixtures against Oxford United and West Bromwich Albion follow, before a potentially decisive final day clash at Norwich City on 3 May — a game Perry hopes won’t be too late to salvage survival hopes.
Cardiff currently sit on 42 points, behind Derby (43), with Luton Town and Plymouth Argyle also in the fight on 40. Portsmouth (46) and Hull City (44) are not entirely out of danger, but it’s the Bluebirds’ slide and lack of identity that worry observers most.
Perry added: “They’re lacking ideas. Constant changes in formations and personnel… it looks like Omer Riza is just searching for something that works. Sadly, he hasn’t found it.”
