Lincoln City forward Jovon Makama has clinched the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month award for March, marking a standout period in the 21-year-old’s young career.
Makama, a product of the club’s academy, enjoyed a blistering run of form, scoring five times and assisting three more as the Imps pushed forward in the league. His performances, particularly in the final third, have elevated him from a promising youth product to one of the division’s hottest names.
The highlight of Makama’s month came in spectacular style with a hat-trick against Bristol Rovers – his first ever at senior level. It also made him the first Lincoln academy graduate to net a treble since Mick Harford in the early 1980s.
“Scoring my first professional hat-trick was a moment I’ll never forget and felt that bit more special having played for this club since I was 16. This is a club where they’re willing to put their trust in young players. The reception fans gave me when I came off was incredible.
“The feeling you get when you’ve got the players, staff and fans all congratulating you is amazing and it’s a day I’ll always remember. My family were there as well, and they’ve played a huge role in helping me get to this stage in my career.
“I’m playing with confidence and know that every time I go out there on the pitch I’m able to make a real difference and help Lincoln City win games of football.”
Makama first signed professionally with Lincoln in 2021 and made his senior debut the following year in the EFL Cup. After a loan spell at Brackley, where he notched his first senior goal, the young forward returned to Sincil Bank and has steadily climbed the ranks. His recent position shift to a wide right role in March seems to have unlocked a new level in his game.
Head coach Michael Skubala praised the youngster’s development and consistency, noting that his power and presence are becoming key assets to the team.
The new role has transformed him into a more dynamic threat, contributing to Lincoln’s attacking momentum. His performances have not only impressed fans but also drawn attention across League One.
Writer’s view
Makama’s story is the kind that clubs dream of—an academy graduate stepping up when it matters. His rise is symbolic of the faith Lincoln places in youth development. His transformation into a wide forward has added a new dimension to his game, and if he keeps this form going, there’s little doubt bigger clubs will start to circle.
For now, though, Lincoln fans should savour the journey of a home-grown hero thriving in his element.
