Paul Heckingbottom has revealed the changes Preston North End will target in the summer transfer window as the club looks to strengthen for next season.
The PNE boss admitted that there will be significant changes to the squad, with a focus on adding “1v1 players” to bolster the attack.
Heckingbottom Eyes Vital Additions for PNE
Speaking after a 2-0 defeat to Derby County, Heckingbottom outlined the areas that need improvement, particularly in the attacking third.
“We need players who can hold the ball, be comfortable in tight spaces, and those who can create moments in 1v1 situations,” said the PNE boss. “We want to bring in players who can make a real difference in those moments, whether it’s a winger who can take on defenders or a forward who can create chances on their own.”
Heckingbottom acknowledged that adding such players would be difficult, given the club’s limited financial resources compared to larger clubs. “Big clubs stockpile [talent],” he said. “But we’re not in that position. We have to be smart about our recruitment. Loans and identifying young talent are two key ways we’re looking at.”
The manager also hinted at the challenge of signing players who can perform consistently over the course of a season, especially those on loan from Premier League clubs. “The 1v1 players you’re looking for might be young, so while they can be brilliant at times, they might struggle in other areas,” Heckingbottom explained. “But if we’re developing them, it’s worth it.”
Heckingbottom also expressed his ambition to develop players in-house, identifying a potential strategy of finding under-the-radar talent and nurturing them into key performers. “It’s about spotting players that maybe others haven’t got yet,” he said. “We want to be the ones to bring them in, work with them, and help them become the players we need.”
The summer transfer window is shaping up to be an important one for Preston North End, with the club looking to make several new signings, especially in attack. “We need to improve in the final third,” Heckingbottom continued. “We have to be more patient when teams sit back and make sure we break them down effectively.”
