Stockport County Announce Significant Losses

Stockport County’s accounts for the 2023/24 season reveal a significant financial loss of over £7 million.

Despite this, the club’s long-term stability and success are secured thanks to the generous financial backing of owner Mark Stott, who injected £11 million into the club in the form of new shares.

The season saw over £640,000 spent on player signings, bolstering the squad for their league campaign. On the pitch, Stockport achieved remarkable success, clinching the League Two title for the second time in three seasons, confirming their upward trajectory. Their average attendance of 9,331 was the highest in 57 years, a testament to the growing support at Edgeley Park.

The club is now firmly positioned in League One, currently sitting in 5th place, and on track to record their best league finish in 23 years. This positive on-field performance contrasts sharply with their financial losses, but CEO Simon Wilson has been quick to praise the club’s owner for his continued investment and vision.

“This latest step for the club was brought about by the combination of incredible skill and effort from the staff, passion and commitment from the supporters, and, of course, the important investment and guidance from Mark,” Simon Wilson said. “It is no secret how difficult the global financial climate is, and we could not grow at the rate we are without Mark’s support.”

Stott’s financial commitment comes at a time when many clubs are facing difficult economic challenges. For comparison, Wrexham, another club recently attracting attention, reported losses of £2 million, while Huddersfield Town’s losses reached a staggering £20 million. Despite these figures, Stockport’s growth trajectory looks promising, with their financial foundation underpinned by their owner’s support.

As Stockport County continue to climb the league ranks, their future looks bright, thanks in no small part to Stott’s backing. With the club’s fortunes on the up both on and off the pitch, they are set to be a force to be reckoned with in the years ahead.

Writer’s View

Stockport County’s financial losses might seem concerning at first glance, but the reality is that the club is thriving thanks to Mark Stott’s personal investment. With the club heading into League One and boasting an impressive following, Stockport’s financial losses don’t reflect the positive strides they’re making. Under Stott’s leadership, Stockport have proven that success can be achieved even in tough financial climates, and their future looks incredibly promising.
