Former Sunderland Man Seals Switch Back To North East

Gateshead have completed the loan signing of former Sunderland and Blackpool midfielder Ethan Robson from Carlisle United.

Robson has struggled for game time since joining Carlisle last summer, making only eight appearances in what has been a frustrating debut campaign in Cumbria. With the League Two side battling near the bottom of the table, a decision was made to allow the midfielder to leave on a temporary basis in order to regain fitness and form.

The switch to National League outfit Gateshead reunites Robson with Heed manager Carl Magnay, who he briefly worked with during his time at Carlisle.

Fresh start under familiar face

“Delighted. Obviously, I’ve worked with Mags a little bit at Carlisle, but I’m looking forward to working with him again and hoping to have a strong back end of the season. I’ve had a few injuries, so in terms of game time, I haven’t had loads, but I’m fit now and I’m ready to show everyone what I can do.”

Robson began his career at Sunderland, coming through the club’s academy system before making his senior debut in 2017. Despite showing promise, consistent first-team opportunities proved hard to come by and he moved on to enjoy spells at Grimsby, Blackpool and MK Dons, before signing for Carlisle last year.

Carlisle sporting director Rob Clarkson confirmed the club’s decision to sanction the move:

“This is a good opportunity for Ethan to get some much-needed football for the remainder of the season. We wish him well and look forward to welcoming him back for the start of pre-season.”

Gateshead are currently battling for a play-off spot in the National League and will hope Robson’s experience at higher levels can prove invaluable during the run-in. The midfielder, known for his passing range and athleticism, is expected to provide a boost to a squad that has recently endured a tough run of results.

Robson is likely to feature this weekend as Gateshead travel to Barnet in a key fixture for their top-seven ambitions.

Writer’s view

This loan looks a smart move for all parties. Robson gets the chance to play regularly and prove his fitness, Gateshead gain an experienced midfielder, and Carlisle retain a player who may yet have a part to play next season. If Robson can rediscover form quickly, he could become a vital asset in Gateshead’s promotion chase – and remind a few people of the quality that once made him a big hope at Sunderland.
