Gateshead are understood to be pushing to complete a deal for former Sunderland midfielder Ethan Robson before the non-league transfer deadline passes at 5pm on Thursday.
The 28-year-old has emerged as a target for Carl Magnay’s side as they look to strengthen ahead of the Vanarama National League play-off run-in. Robson is expected to add depth and experience to a squad that has recently endured a seven-game winless spell but remains in a strong position to challenge for promotion to the EFL.
From Premier League academy to non-league push
Robson came through the youth system at Sunderland and made his senior debut in the League Cup in 2017. Despite being highly rated at the Stadium of Light, his appearances were limited, and he embarked on loan moves to Dundee and Grimsby Town before permanently leaving in 2020.
A move to Blackpool followed, where he was part of the side that earned promotion from League One. However, Robson struggled for consistent minutes in the Championship and eventually joined MK Dons. After experiencing relegation with the Buckinghamshire club, he moved to Carlisle United in League Two last summer but has made just seven appearances under new manager Mark Hughes.
Now, a switch to Gateshead is being explored as the club attempts to capitalise on the National League transfer window before it closes. He is not the only incoming being pursued, with the Heed also seeking multiple additions before the deadline.
Robson could be the second notable signing after Frank Nouble, formerly of West Ham United, joined earlier this month. With Gateshead’s play-off position under threat, Magnay is eager to bring in reinforcements.
Alongside the push for new signings, the club is edging closer to a proposed takeover led by former Sunderland and Everton striker Victor Anichebe. The prospective deal could bring stability and funding to a club that has operated under a cloud of uncertainty since January.
While Magnay remains uncertain about his own long-term role, he has made clear his belief that investment is vital for the club’s growth and long-term prospects.

Writer’s view
In Ethan Robson, Gateshead would be acquiring a midfielder with pedigree and experience well above the level they’re competing at. But beyond the transfer, the real story lies in the background noise: a potential takeover, a frustrated manager, and a club desperate for clarity. If the Robson deal is sealed, it will offer a timely lift – but it’s just one piece of a bigger puzzle.
