Luton Town have confirmed that young full-back Jacob Pinnington has completed a permanent move to National League side Braintree Town, bringing an end to his five-year journey at Kenilworth Road.
Pinnington, 20, has been a standout performer in Luton’s youth setup and had been on loan at Braintree since January. Following an impressive run of form in Essex, the defender has now agreed an 18-month deal with the Iron, following in the footsteps of fellow Hatters academy graduate Aidan Francis-Clarke, who also made his loan spell at the club permanent.
Loan Success Turns Into Permanent Opportunity
The full-back initially joined Luton after playing grassroots football in Harpenden. He captained the club’s U18s to a Youth Alliance South East title and helped them reach the FA Youth Cup fifth round in 2023, eventually signing his first professional development contract that year.
Pinnington spent last season on loan at AFC Sudbury and started the current campaign with Solihull Moors, making nine appearances. His move to Braintree came as part of a double January loan swap involving Francis-Clarke, and both players have now committed to the National League outfit full-time.
Since his arrival at Cressing Road, Pinnington has featured 13 times and played a vital role in the team’s upturn in form. Braintree have won seven of those matches, including a recent 2-1 victory over York City which has lifted them further clear of the relegation zone.

Move Confirmed
Luton Town confirmed the move in a short statement, wishing the young defender well as he takes the next step in his career.
“With the loan now being made permanent, Jacob departs with the best wishes of everyone at Luton Town for his future career. Thank you and good luck, Pinno!”
Braintree Town were also quick to share their delight, writing on social media:
“We are delighted to announce the signing of Jacob Pinnington from @lutontown on a permanent deal until the end of next season. Glad to have you fully on-board Jacob.”
His departure comes as Luton continue to streamline their development squad, with a focus on ensuring young players secure regular football at senior level elsewhere when first-team opportunities are limited.
Writer’s View
Jacob Pinnington’s exit from Luton Town is a classic case of a young talent finding his level to shine. While a Premier League pathway at Kenilworth Road was always going to be a tall order, his impact at Braintree shows he’s ready for the rigours of senior football. At just 20, this permanent switch gives him a real platform to push on — and Luton will no doubt be watching his progress closely.
