Former Colchester United Player ‘Not Surprised’ They’re Promotion Contenders

Former Colchester United midfielder Cameron McGeehan has praised the club’s progress this season under manager Danny Cowley and believes they have what it takes to push for the League Two play-offs.

McGeehan Backs Colchester’s Play-Off Push

McGeehan, who left the U’s last summer to join League One side Northampton Town, has been following his former club’s fortunes and is not surprised by their rise up the table.

“It’s great to see Colchester United doing well this season. I’m not surprised – the manager [Danny Cowley] has really steadied the ship. He’s done well as a manager in his career, so I could see that it was going to go well. They’ve recruited well, it’s a good club with a strong fan base and a great stadium. Hopefully, they can push for the play-offs.”

The 29-year-old spent a single season at the JobServe Community Stadium, making 39 appearances in all competitions and finishing as the club’s second-highest scorer with ten goals.

Cameron McGeehan Career

McGeehan joined Chelsea from Fulham at 10 but was released in 2011, moving to Norwich City where he captained their 2013 FA Youth Cup-winning side. After loans at Luton and Cambridge, he joined Luton permanently in 2015, impressing with his goalscoring.

He moved to Barnsley in 2017, with loan spells at Scunthorpe and Portsmouth before joining Belgian side Oostende in 2020. After his time in Belgium, McGeehan returned to England, signing a one-year deal with Colchester United in the 2023/24 season.

Moving On to League One

After impressing at Colchester, McGeehan was offered a new contract but instead chose to sign for Northampton, where he has since made 34 appearances and scored nine goals.

Explaining his decision, he said: “I wanted to play at a higher level, so leaving wasn’t too difficult. I’m happy to see them doing well now, but for me, it was about taking the next step in my career – and that’s what I’ve done.”

Writer’s View

McGeehan’s story is a testament to resilience and determination in football. His journey from the Championship to Belgium and then back to League Two before climbing to League One highlights the unpredictable nature of the game.

The same can be said of Colchester and their management duo of Danny and Nicky Cowley. Colchester have found stability under Cowley after a turbulent few seasons, and the manager has found a stable home after tough spells at Portsmouth and Huddersfield. It really looks like a match made in heaven.
