Bristol City manager Liam Manning has reiterated his desire to keep Nahki Wells at Ashton Gate beyond the summer but admits there is no concrete update on contract negotiations.
The 34-year-old’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, but he still played a crucial role in City’s 2-1 victory over Norwich City at Ashton Gate this weekend. He netted the second goal as the Robins moved level on points with the Championship play-off places.
Talks Underway, but No Agreement Yet
Following the win over Norwich, Manning provided an update on Wells’ situation but admitted negotiations are still ongoing behind the scenes.
“No update on the contractual thing,” Manning said in his post-match press conference. “We’ve been in touch with his agent and Brian [Tinnion] is speaking with the agent.
“That’s still ongoing behind the scenes so there’s no news on that one. He’s had a fantastic season to be fair when you look at his contribution and what he brings to the group. I think he’s the only one we’ve got over the age of 30 which is important as well.
“He’s hugely instrumental in some of the stuff behind the scenes, keeping people on track, focused, holding people accountable, the personality he brings and the standard he sets. You only have to look at his physical condition to see how well he looks after himself.”

Manning’s Personal Preference Clear
When asked directly if he would like to keep Wells, Manning was clear in his response.
“Yeah, I would. I’d keep him,” he said.
Wells’ leadership and experience have been vital for Bristol City this season, particularly as they push for a play-off spot in the final weeks of the campaign.
Bristol City’s Play-Off Push
With the international break now providing a brief pause, Bristol City have just eight league matches remaining in their pursuit of a play-off spot.
The Robins face a tough run-in, with away trips to Leeds United and Burnley, as well as home clashes against promotion rivals West Brom, Sunderland, and Watford. However, their fate remains in their own hands, and if they can pick up key results, a top-six finish is well within reach.

Wells’ influence at Bristol City goes beyond just his performances on the pitch. His leadership, experience, and ability to deliver in key moments make him a valuable asset.
If the Robins secure a play-off spot—or even achieve promotion—extending his contract could be a smart move, ensuring continuity and maintaining a strong dressing-room presence.
