Rotherham United boss Steve Evans has expressed his desire to keep midfielder Pelly Mpanzu at the club beyond his current loan spell from Luton Town.
Since joining the Millers on transfer deadline day in January, the 30-year-old has been a key figure in Rotherham’s midfield, starting every League One game.
Evans Wants Mpanzu to Stay
Mpanzu, whose contract with Luton Town expires this summer, has become an integral part of Rotherham’s push for promotion. Evans is hopeful that the midfielder will consider making South Yorkshire his permanent home.
“I’d love to work with him going forward. He’s delivered some terrific performances for us,” Evans said.
The Hendon-born midfielder made history with Luton by rising from non-league to the Premier League with the same club. However, with his contract winding down, Rotherham is eager to capitalize on the opportunity.
Competition for Mpanzu
While Rotherham United is keen to sign Mpanzu, Evans acknowledges that securing his services won’t be straightforward. Given his experience and performances, the midfielder is likely to attract attention from other clubs.
“Pelly is a really good guy, a big family man. He’s certainly telling myself, the staff, and his family that he’s loving every minute of his time here,” Evans added.
The Rotherham manager plans to discuss Mpanzu’s future with club owner Tony Stewart and director of football recruitment Rob Scott in April.
Joe Rafferty’s Recovery
Meanwhile, right-back Joe Rafferty is nearing full fitness after being sidelined by a virus that caused him to lose nearly five kilograms. The defender, who returned as a late substitute against Wrexham, is now regaining his strength.
“He’s trained well this week and his weight has come right back up. It’s nearly back to where it was previously,” Evans confirmed.
Rafferty also featured in a recent practice match, playing 45 minutes to build his match fitness.
Writer’s View
Securing Pelly Mpanzu on a permanent deal would be a major coup for Rotherham United. The midfielder’s quality, work rate, and experience at a higher level make him a valuable asset. His ability to drive forward with the ball and dictate play from midfield has already made a significant impact on Evans’ side.
However, it won’t be easy. With his contract at Luton Town expiring, there will be no shortage of interest from Championship and even high-ranking League One clubs. Rotherham’s financial situation could also play a role—can they offer him a deal that matches what other potential suitors might put on the table?
