Departing Charlton Athletic Man Delivers Nathan Jones Assessment

Charlton Athletic’s chief executive Charlie Methven has announced he will step down from his role in May, marking the end of his tenure with the club.

Methven, who played a key role in Global Football Partners’ takeover of the Addicks in July 2023, believes Charlton is in a strong position moving forward.

Praise for Nathan Jones

Speaking to the South London Press, Methven was particularly effusive in his praise for manager Nathan Jones, who took charge of Charlton during a difficult period but is now, in his view, beginning to demonstrate his managerial qualities.

“I’d like to put on record what a huge pleasure it has been working with Nathan Jones. He is an exceptional leader and a project manager. Charlton has now got through what is often a sticky patch for project managers, and people are going to see just what a good manager he is. The club is going to experience what it is like to have a top, top manager.”

Jones, who previously managed Luton Town and Southampton, has seen his reputation strengthen in recent weeks as Charlton push for promotion.

Future Plans and Shareholding

Methven’s post-Charlton plans will see him focus on Mount Pleasant, Charlton’s partner academy club in Jamaica, as well as an associated sports investment fund in the United States.

Regarding his shareholding in Charlton, he admitted discussions are ongoing but clarified that his departure as CEO is not conditional on selling his stake.

“It is an ongoing conversation with my partners. I expect there probably will be some movement in that regard at some point, but it is not yet absolutely 100 per cent clear what that will be.”

Looking Back at His Tenure

Methven acknowledged the challenges faced when taking over the club, describing it as like “catching a falling knife” due to its struggles both on and off the pitch. However, he remains proud of the work done to stabilise and improve the club.

“It has been a very positive experience. I have made a lot of friends, not just inside the club but also inside the fanbase and locally, because I’ve been living in South-East London for the last year. It is an absolutely terrific club. Watching the women’s games on Sunday was a reminder that this is a proper, proper football club.”

Writer’s View

Methven’s departure comes at a time when Charlton Athletic appears to be on a more stable trajectory, both on and off the pitch. His faith in Nathan Jones will be put to the test as the club pushes for promotion. Meanwhile, the decision to step down well in advance of the summer transfer window suggests a desire for continuity.
