Rotherham United Man Could Still Exit Club

Rotherham United are encouraging centre-back Jake Hull to secure a loan move for the remainder of the season, despite recently adding him to their EFL squad list.

The 23-year-old was named on the bench for the Millers’ 3-2 victory over Bristol Rovers earlier this month due to injuries and illness depleting the defensive ranks.

EFL Rules

Manager Steve Evans no longer sees the player as able to make the first-team squad, meaning a move away is still required. While EFL regulations prevent Hull from joining another league side at this stage of the season, a switch to a National League or lower-tier club remains an option.

“He can still go to a non-league club,” Evans confirmed. “It’s something we’re looking at now.”

Hull’s contract with Rotherham expires at the end of the season, making him a free agent in the summer. The centre-back has previously gained experience during loan spells at Hartlepool United, Guiseley, Boston United, and Buxton but has never featured in a league match for the Millers.

Who Is Jake Hull?

Born in Sheffield, Hull began his career at Rotherham United, signing his first professional contract in August 2020. He had loan spells at Matlock Town, Guiseley, Hartlepool United, Boston United, and Buxton. Hull scored on his senior debut in the EFL Trophy in September 2021.

He spent the 2023–24 season on loan at Buxton before returning to Rotherham for 2024–25, where he was omitted from the squad list. However, he was recently added to that squad list.

Young Talent Also Departing

In addition to Hull’s uncertain future, young forward Ben Hatton has secured a loan move to non-league Warrington Town for the rest of the campaign. The 19-year-old, who has made appearances in the Vertu Trophy and FA Cup this season, has also been included in Rotherham’s League One matchday squads. Hatton will join fellow Millers prospect Hamish Douglas, who has been on loan at Warrington Town since October.

Evans stressed the importance of game time for Hatton, stating: “The boy needs to play games.”

Writer’s View

Jake Hull’s situation highlights the challenges faced by young defenders trying to break into the first team at a competitive League One club. With no clear pathway under Evans, a loan move could provide the minutes he needs to showcase his ability.

However, with his contract running down, this could also signal the end of his time at Rotherham. Meanwhile, Hatton’s move suggests Rotherham are keen to develop their younger players through lower-league experience, potentially preparing them for future roles at the club.
