Bolton Wanderers manager Steven Schumacher has played down concerns following his side’s midweek loss at Bristol Rovers, insisting they remain fully focused on Saturday’s pivotal clash against Stockport County.
Tuesday night’s 1-0 loss ended the Wanderers’ impressive winning streak, but Schumacher remains optimistic as they prepare for a game that could have significant implications in the League One play-off race.
A victory at the Toughsheet Stadium on Saturday would not only put Bolton back on track but also allow them to move above Stockport in the standings.
High Stakes as Bolton Seek Revenge
Earlier in the season, Bolton suffered a humbling 5-0 defeat at Edgeley Park, one of their worst results of the campaign. With Stockport currently sitting fifth, this rematch carries added weight as both sides push for a strong finish.
Schumacher, however, has made it clear that the outcome at Bristol Rovers does not change the importance of this fixture.
“The Stockport game was always going to be huge for both clubs regardless of what result we got (at Bristol). There’s no big drama. We are not going to get carried away. The performance as a whole was very good, especially given the run we have been on.”
Bolton Look to Bounce Back
Schumacher is eager to shift focus onto the positives, highlighting his squad’s recent performances and work ethic. While admitting there are lessons to be learned from the defeat, he believes his players are well-prepared to respond.
“It’s obviously a missed opportunity to go above them (Stockport) in the table and get some more momentum. But I am not going to get too down on it, I’m not going to get disappointed. There are things we have to improve on and learn from, and we will.”
Saturday’s fixture marks Bolton’s fifth match of the month, with just one more game before the international break. Stockport, meanwhile, will also have a demanding schedule, facing Wrexham on March 22.
Writer’s View
Schumacher’s composed approach to the defeat at Bristol Rovers reflects the mentality he is instilling at Bolton. While losing ground in the play-off race is frustrating, his focus remains on long-term consistency.
Saturday’s clash against Stockport is undoubtedly a major test, but Wanderers have already shown their resilience this season. If they can capitalise on key moments, a statement victory could be on the cards.
