Barnsley have appointed former Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane as interim manager until the end of the season following the dismissal of Darrell Clarke.
The 34-year-old, who made over 100 league appearances for Villa between 2017 and 2022, takes over with the Tykes sitting 10th in League One, eight points adrift of the play-off places with 10 games remaining.
Hourihane, who played a key role in Villa’s promotion to the Premier League in 2018-19, will now look to inspire a late push for the top six in South Yorkshire.
Barnsley Football Club can confirm that Darrell Clarke has been relieved of his duties as Men’s First Team Head Coach.

Clarke dismissed as Barnsley eye fresh direction
Clarke was sacked following a disappointing run that left Barnsley struggling to break into the play-off race. The former Walsall and Port Vale boss had been in charge for less than a season before the club opted for a change in leadership.
Speaking after Clarke’s departure, Barnsley sporting director Mladen Sormaz emphasised the club’s need for a shift in playing style.
“Darrell is someone I respect and have enjoyed working with, and I’d like to thank him for his efforts this season.
“Whilst a list of replacements has been identified, we will take some time to ensure the next appointment is the right one with a focus on playing identity, returning to high pressing and attacking football.
“We believe that Conor can help to create enough bounce to keep us fighting for the top six until the end of the season. We will also be working in parallel to have a new Head Coach in place over the summer.”
Hourihane’s transition into management
Hourihane, who captained Barnsley during his playing days, is making his first steps into management. The Irishman spent three successful years at Oakwell between 2014 and 2017 before earning a move to Aston Villa, where he was instrumental in their return to the Premier League.
His leadership qualities and experience at the highest level could provide the spark Barnsley need in their final games of the season as they look to mount a late play-off charge.
Writer’s view
This is a bold appointment for Barnsley, but one that could energise the squad. Hourihane knows the club well, and his leadership qualities were evident throughout his playing career.
With the play-offs still within reach, his ability to inspire the dressing room will be key. However, with a permanent head coach search ongoing for the summer, this is very much an audition for Hourihane if he has long-term managerial ambitions. The next 10 games could be career-defining for the former Villa midfielder.
