Former Leeds United Man Lands New Role With Yorkshire Rivals

Former Leeds United midfielder Michael Tonge has been promoted to Huddersfield Town’s first-team coaching staff under interim head coach Jon Worthington for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

Tonge, 41, steps up from his role with the club’s B team and will assist Worthington alongside Kevin Russell, who had been part of Michael Duff’s coaching team. Meanwhile, goalkeeping coach Neil Bennett has also been integrated into the new-look backroom staff.

Worthington Pleased with Staff Appointments

Worthington, who is in his second stint as interim head coach after previously overseeing four Championship matches earlier this season, expressed confidence in his coaching team’s ability to stabilise the squad.

“I’m really pleased to be once again joined by Michael, Kevin, and Neil in the dugout,” Worthington said.

“It was important to me to have trust, comfort, and belief in those I’m coaching alongside, so I’m happy that each of them agreed to be part of my staff when asked without hesitation.

“Michael has been doing an important role leading our B team, and that position has given him plenty of exposure to our first-team group and existing staff already.”

With Neil Bennett overseeing goalkeeping duties, Worthington believes the squad will benefit from consistency and familiarity in training methods.

“To have Neil overseeing our goalkeepers provides consistency in method and belief. He’s worked with all of our current goalkeepers previously, giving their group a helpful familiarity to hit the ground running.”

Michael Tonge Career

Michael Tonge, a midfielder born in Manchester, began his career at Sheffield United after being released by Manchester United. He became a key player under Neil Warnock, helping the club reach the 2003 FA Cup and League Cup semi-finals and earning a spot in the PFA Team of the Year.

After a stint at Stoke City, where he struggled for playing time, he had loan spells at Preston, Derby, Barnsley, and Leeds, later joining Leeds permanently. He finished his career at Stevenage and Port Vale, earning praise for his professionalism and leadership. He retired after the 2018–19 season.

Huddersfield Look to Regain Form

Huddersfield Town have struggled for consistency in recent months, slipping out of the League One play-off positions after securing just four wins in their last 15 matches. The club will be hoping that this new coaching setup can provide a much-needed boost as they prepare for their next fixture against Crawley Town on Saturday.

Writer’s View

Tonge stepping up is a good example of a former professional taking the first steps in his coaching career. Huddersfield Town are a strong prospect in League One, and whether it’s this season or next, they’re sure to be Championship again once again, offering Tonge a chance to start adding coaching accolades to his illustrious playing CV.
