Exeter City Boss Wary Of Threat Posed By Strugglers

Exeter City continue their fight for League One survival as they prepare to face a struggling Mansfield Town side at St James Park tonight.

Fresh off a vital 2-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town, the Grecians have extended their unbeaten run to three matches, moving seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Wary of Mansfield Town Threat

Manager Gary Caldwell remains wary of the threat posed by Mansfield despite their 13-game winless streak.

“They started the season incredibly well, so we know at their best, they are a real threat,” said Caldwell. “We are also in a good vein of form, and we need to continue that from now until the end of the season.”

With Mansfield slipping from promotion contenders to relegation battlers, Caldwell acknowledges that injuries, particularly the absence of Lee Gregory, have hurt their form. However, with experienced forward Jordan Rhodes and the dangerous Will Evans in their ranks, the Stags still possess attacking quality.

Exeter’s Defensive Stability Key to Continued Success

City’s recent resurgence has been built on defensive solidity, with a new-look back three of Alex Hartridge, Angus MacDonald, and Ed Turns forming a strong partnership. Goalkeeper Joe Whitworth has provided consistency behind them, with two clean sheets in the last three matches.

“When we didn’t have continuity in selection, we struggled. Now we have that back, it’s no coincidence that we’re getting better results,” Caldwell explained. “It’s a foundation for how we can go and win games.”

With defensive concerns easing, Caldwell hopes the settled backline will continue to provide a platform for success in the crucial final stretch of the season.

A ‘Manager’s Headache’ with Squad Options Returning

Exeter are also benefitting from increased squad depth, with captain Pierce Sweeney nearing a return and midfielder Kevin McDonald back in training. The likes of Ilmari Niskanen, Jake Richards, and Andrew Oluwabori are also pushing for places, highlighting the competition within the squad.

“We have plenty of options available, and that keeps players on their toes,” Caldwell added. “The more depth we have, the more decisions I have to make, which is a good problem to have.”

Writer’s View

A win tonight would see Exeter extend their cushion above the drop zone, with another home game against a struggling side offering an excellent opportunity to build momentum. While Mansfield’s recent struggles make them vulnerable, Caldwell is ensuring his players do not take anything for granted.

With defensive solidity and increased squad depth, the Grecians are well-placed to extend their unbeaten run and continue their march towards safety.
