Wrexham striker Sam Smith has opened up about the key differences between his new club and former side Reading, ahead of an emotional return to Berkshire on Tuesday night.
Smith, who joined Wrexham in January in a seven-figure deal, scored the winning goal in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Rotherham United at the STōK Cae Ras. Now, he is preparing to face his old teammates for the first time since leaving Reading earlier this year.
Smith Adjusting to ‘Completely Different’ Environment
Speaking ahead of the trip, Smith highlighted the stark contrast between his former and current club, particularly in terms of squad experience.
“It’s completely different,” Smith told Wrexham Match Day Live. “I think I’ve come from one of the youngest squads to one of the oldest squads, so that’s a massive environment change.
Being back up north is different and living out of the hotel is difficult. I think moving in January is hard for anyone but I’ve just got to keep working hard for the team and hope the performances follow.”
The 25-year-old, who celebrated his birthday with a goal at the weekend, has quickly settled into life at Wrexham. The club beat off stiff competition to secure his signature, hoping he can help fire them into the Championship.

Familiar Faces Return to Reading
Smith is not the only one making a return to his former club on Tuesday. Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson also has deep ties to Reading, having been a key figure for the Royals as a player.
Although Parkinson has visited Berkshire several times in his managerial career, this fixture carries extra significance as he looks to guide Wrexham to a vital three points in their promotion push.
With a crunch clash against second-placed Wycombe Wanderers on the horizon, a victory against Reading could be crucial for Wrexham’s Championship ambitions.
Writer’s View
Smith’s transition from Reading to Wrexham appears to have gone smoothly on the pitch, but his comments highlight the challenges of adapting to a new squad mid-season. The shift from a youthful side to a more experienced group may ultimately benefit his development, and Tuesday’s match will be a real test of his mentality.
As for Wrexham, momentum is key in the race for automatic promotion, and three points against Reading would set them up perfectly for a huge showdown with Wycombe next weekend.
