Cheltenham Town manager Michael Flynn has not held back in his criticism of Colchester United and their over-celebrating following their 1-0 win over Flynn’s side, as reported by the Daily Gazette.
Danny Cowley’s side extended their unbeaten run to 11 at the expense of a Cheltenham side who are now without a win in four.
The U’s Playing Tricks
Flynn was unhappy with how Colchester approached the game and how Cowley and his staff celebrated at the end of 90 minutes. Flynn said:
“I thought they were up to all sorts of tricks.”
“They were fouling, they were diving and I have always got on well with Danny Cowley.”
“I am not happy with the way he celebrated. Yes, everybody is happy when you win a game, but I wouldn’t disrespect his fans.”
Typical Of Danny Cowley Teams
Flynn was asked if the United boss over-celebrated:
“I do, yes. That’s what caused all the drama after the game.”
“Be happy you’ve won, of course. Cheer, but don’t turn around and keep going on and on. The amount of games they were playing today was typical of Danny Cowley’s teams.”
Tired Of Being Nice
One of Flynn’s coaching staff, former Colchester winger Ashley Vincent, ended up being involved in strong words with U’s striker Lyle Taylor after becoming angered at the visitors’ celebration.
Flynn said:
“Ashley was massively aggrieved with the over celebrations.”
“As I said, I felt it was disrespectful and I will say it, I’ve always had time for Danny.”
“He is not going to like what I am saying here, but I am tired of being nice and respectful when we are not getting it back, so I am going to stick up for my staff and my club this time.”
Home defender Sam Stubbs was also involved in exchanges with Colchester players and staff at the final whistle after, according to Flynn, Cowley attempted to get a reaction.
“Yes, Danny was trying to get a reaction out of Sam and he got one, so again there was just no need for it.”
Writer’s View
Some very strong words from Flynn on the back of defeat to the ever-improving U’s. Cowley is an expert at slowing the game down and taking the sting out of things, something that is so frustrating as an opposition manager, player or supporter.
It is doubtful whether the two managers will now get on as well as they perhaps did before, particularly with comments made about this behaviour being ‘typical’ of Cowley teams.
