Excitement is building at Cheltenham Town as Manchester United loanee Ethan Williams continues to impress, with manager Michael Flynn hailing him as a “fantastic talent” ahead of Tuesday night’s crucial League Two clash with leaders Walsall.
Williams Making His Mark at Cheltenham
The young winger, on loan from Old Trafford, grabbed his first senior goal in Cheltenham’s dominant 3-0 win over Newport County at the weekend. His early contributions have not gone unnoticed, with an assist for Matty Taylor in the same game and a match-winning set-up for Ashley Hay in a thrilling 3-2 comeback against Barrow.
“He’s a fantastic talent,” Flynn said. “He’s so good in and around the box and his work rate has really impressed me. I think he’s got a bright future. There are improvements to be made, but once he does that he’s going to be a very good player.”
Flynn, who previously managed Walsall, will be aiming to mastermind a victory over his former club, who are currently sitting at the top of the League Two table. The Saddlers, led by Mat Sadler, hold an eight-point advantage over second-placed Doncaster Rovers and are showing no signs of slowing down.

Big Test Against League Leaders
Walsall came out on top when the two sides met earlier in the season, securing a 2-1 victory at the Bescot Stadium. Since then, they have gone from strength to strength, displaying the consistency required of promotion contenders.
Despite the challenge, Flynn remains optimistic that Cheltenham can cause an upset, especially with key players returning to the squad. Winger Jordan Thomas is back in contention after missing the Newport fixture due to illness, providing a much-needed boost ahead of a tough encounter.
On the opposite touchline, Walsall boss Sadler is expecting a difficult battle at the EV Charger Points Stadium, acknowledging Cheltenham’s recent form and strength in depth.
“It’s a very tough one,” Sadler said. “I think they’re a very good team. For the last three or four months, they’ve shown what a really good team they are and they have a good balance about them. We know it’ll be a really difficult evening, but we look forward to it.”
Writer’s View
Williams’ early impact at Cheltenham is a huge positive for both the club and Manchester United. His composure and creativity in the final third suggest he has a bright future ahead, and continued performances like these could see him fast-tracked into higher levels of the game. Cheltenham will need him at his best against a well-drilled Walsall side, but if Flynn’s men can build on their recent form, they could provide a stern test for the league leaders.
