Chesterfield are looking beyond British shores in a bid to bolster their squad, with the club’s recruitment team set to scout potential signings across Europe.
The Spireites aim to ‘box clever’ in the transfer market, seeking talent in Holland, Denmark, and Belgium.
Expanding the Search for New Talent
The club’s recruitment team, led by head of recruitment Neil Hornby, along with scouts Kieran Cook and Danny Ventre, work closely with manager Paul Cook and his backroom staff to identify suitable players. This group analyses potential signings using video footage, statistical data, and live match scouting.
Chesterfield have already invested in StatsBomb, a cutting-edge data analytics platform, to assess performance metrics. The club believes that looking beyond the UK’s familiar talent pool could give them a crucial edge in the market.
Hornby and Cook will travel to Holland, Denmark, and Belgium to evaluate potential targets. The move signals an ambitious shift in the club’s strategy, as they seek to exploit emerging opportunities abroad.
“We’ve had discussions, we’ve reached out to people and spoken to them, and they are the leagues we are going to look at to get a real gauge of the level and whether it is suitable or not for us,” Hornby said on the club’s in-house Weekend Warm-up podcast. “Ash and Phil are backing us 100% to get out there and have a look.”
The club acknowledges that traditional scouting methods have become increasingly competitive, with multiple teams monitoring the same players. By broadening their search, Chesterfield hope to uncover hidden gems before their rivals.

Chesterfield’s Season So Far
Chesterfield are sitting mid-table in League Two, with 42 points from 31 games. They’ve won 11, drawn nine, and lost 11, showing inconsistency but plenty of attacking intent with 49 goals scored, more than five of the top seven teams. However, defensive lapses have cost them, leaving their promotion hopes hanging in the balance. The play-off are currently ten points away, and looking far less likely than earlier in the season, meaning a promotion challenge is now expected next season.
Writer’s View
Chesterfield’s decision to expand their scouting network is a bold one. Many lower-league clubs remain hesitant to look beyond the domestic market due to logistical challenges and financial constraints. However, with the support of advanced data analytics and a proactive approach, the Spireites could set themselves apart. Whether this European venture will yield results remains to be seen, but it certainly signals the club’s growing ambition.
