Kevin Nolan has called for greater composure from both his players and staff after a nervy end to Northampton Town’s 2-1 win over Bristol Rovers.
Despite securing three points with a quickfire double from Dara Costelloe and Nesta Guinness-Walker, the Cobblers lost control in the final moments at Sixfields.
Calmness Key for Nolan
The Cobblers found themselves trailing early in the second half but responded in style, flipping the match on its head with two goals in 17 minutes. However, the closing stages saw unnecessary tension creep in, something Nolan wants to stamp out moving forward.
“I was asking for calm on the side of the pitch because we didn’t have to go and win the game straight after we conceded,” Nolan said. “There was a lot of time to go and we just had to keep playing the way we did in the first half. Tzans (Nik Tzanev) pulled off another good save just before we scored, and those are the little moments we need to get right because that could easily have been 2-0 and then it’s a mountain to climb.”
While delighted with the overall performance, Nolan emphasised the importance of maintaining control in high-pressure situations.
“These lads have been brilliant and they deserved the win today, but I did think we got a little bit sloppy. In the last five minutes, we need to be more calm—not only on the pitch but also on the sidelines—because I don’t want that to boil over and seep into the team. I don’t want to show any nervousness and it’s important to stay calm.”

Costelloe’s Impact Shining Through
One major positive for the Cobblers was the continued impact of Burnley loanee Costelloe, whose equaliser set the stage for Guinness-Walker’s winner. Nolan was full of praise for the forward’s determination and goal-scoring instincts.
“I thought Dara was excellent again today, and it’s testament to him and how hard he works. I was delighted when I saw that it was him who scored the goal. It was great work by Max Dyche—he didn’t give it up, he put it into a great area, and Dara was there to finish it.”
Writer’s View
While Northampton Town secured another crucial win, the late-game nerves will be a concern for Nolan moving forward. His emphasis on calmness—both on and off the pitch—is crucial if the Cobblers want to maintain momentum in the promotion race. With Costelloe proving to be an inspired addition and Guinness-Walker making decisive contributions, there’s plenty to be optimistic about at Sixfields.
