“Why Not” – Charlton Athletic Man Makes Promotion Claim

Charlton Athletic‘s Will Mannion has said that Charlton Athletic are still capable of reaching an automatic promotion spot.

Four wins in their last five games have put The Addicks back into the play-off positions and face a showdown with fourth-placed Stockport County on the weekend.

Mannion Aims High

Heading into the weekend’s fixtures, Athletic sit eight points behind second-placed Wycombe Wanderers, who themselves are ahead of Wrexham by two points. All three sides have played the same number of games, meaning there is a 12-game showdown between them to seal the final automatic promotion place.

Speaking to the South London Press ahead of their game against Stockport, the goalkeeper had his sights set on a lofty goal of a second-placed finish. He said:

“Yeah, one hundred per cent. It is what everyone wants to do this season – go up.

“It would be great to have on the CV and experience that as well. We’re all really pushing towards that at the moment.

“One hundred per cent (the top two remains a target). I don’t see why not. The main focus is just to focus on ourselves and keep what we’re doing going. Let’s see what happens.”

Charlton have a few hurdles remaining in their season, starting with the game against The Hatters this weekend. They also face Huddersfield Town, before crucial back-to-back games against Wrexham and Wycombe in late April.

Having ambition to try and achieve automatic promotion is always a good trait and with how Nathan Jones’ side are playing it is certainly not out of the question. If they keep up their performances they can put themselves in the best position possible but will have to rely on slip ups from the teams above them to achieve a second-placed finish. The points difference may be too big to overturn but if they can get to within a couple of points of reaching that goal, they can have an air of confidence should they achieve a play-off finish. Promotion is definitely still on the cards for many teams, including Charlton Athletic.
